Summary

The Surgical Technician (ST) is a member of the surgical team at the Beckley Department of Veteran Affairs and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team and the registered nurse.

Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Functions as primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures.
  • Independently sets up sterile field with all required items for each procedure.
  • Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure.
  • Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile surgical setups.
  • Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time.
  • Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist team members with the care of patient, i.e., transporting the patient to surgery, PACU, outpatient units and wards, or positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies. Functions as a second circulator for complex surgical procedures.
  • Assists the pulmonologist during the performance of fiberoptic bronchoscopy with fine needle aspiration, bronchial brushings, and biopsy.
  • Handles all specimens appropriately as they pertain to the body cavity from which they were procured.
  • Performs sponge and instrument counts to verify accuracy. Responsible for the accountability for all surgical instruments and equipment during surgical procedure.
  • Assists in training residents, medical students, nursing students, operating room technology students, and new Operating Room (OR) staff in aseptic/sterile techniques, maintenance of the sterile field, and handling of instruments.
  • Performs non-technical maintenance on equipment to ensure proper operation prior to usage.
  • Collaborates with Supply Chain Management and Sterile Processing Service to ensure an adequate amount and type of supplies are always available.
  • Responsible for the evaluation of the technical capability and potential for the application of new equipment after having prepared the standing operating procedures for its use.
  • Assists the surgeon by performing such procedures as preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, cutting sutures, preparing prosthetic devices for delivery to the sterile field, and handling of instruments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, normally of a related nature.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Specialized experience includes: applying aseptic technique in a sterile surgical field; preparing instrumentation, equipment, supplies in advance of surgical procedures; scrubbing for surgical procedures; preparing operating room suites for procedures; knowledge of human body structure and function; anticipating the needs of the surgeon; assisting with minor surgical procedures; maintaining inventories of medical instruments, supplies, and equipment; and sterilizing instruments. Experience must be documented in your resume.

To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed on full (1) year of graduate level education OR an internship that is directly related to the work of the position. Preferred Experience: 3 years surgical technician experience. Recent 1-2 years surgical technician experience.

To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-07. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
