GS-04 EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-03 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: having knowledge of medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, and aseptic technique to prepare and protect a sterile field during surgery.

GS-4 EDUCATION: Successful completion of two (2) years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the Surgical Technician position.

GS-4 COMBINATION: You must have a combination of general/specialized experience and post high school education as described above that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this Surgical Technician position. This experience must be supported by your resume to be creditable and transcripts are required at time of application.
GS-5 EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in Federal Service that has given you the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician. Specialized experience is providing direct patient care in a hospital/medical/surgical facility; setting up sterile fields; assisting health care providers in surgery for a variety of procedures; following universal precautions for infection control; and understanding and using proper medical terminology.

GS-5 EDUCATION: Successful completion a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc.

GS-5 COMBINATION: Equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as listed above, may also meet the total experience requirements. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This experience must be supported by your resume to be creditable and transcripts are required at time of application.
GS-6 EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in Federal Service that has given you the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician. Specialized experience requires the application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of surgical technician work and includes preparing sterile fields for surgical procedures; monitoring and maintaining aseptic techniques throughout surgical procedures; handling medical instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures; performing proper cleaning techniques, as well as the proper handling and rotation of sterile supplies; properly handling contaminated items applying knowledge of universal precautions and implementing infection control policies and procedures.

GS-6 EDUCATION: Successfully completed one-half year of graduate education (nine semester hours) above a bachelor's degree, which is directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position.

GS-6 COMBINATION: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education (above a bachelor's degree) and specialized experience may also meet the total qualification requirements. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. This experience must be supported by your resume to be creditable and transcripts are required at time of application.
Preferred Experience: Minimum 3 years of Surgical Technician experience. Certified Surgical Technologist preferred.
