Summary

About the Position: Serves as a Survey Technician in the Water Resources Division Survey Unit.

This is a developmental position. You may be selected at the GS-06, GS-07 or GS-08 grade level.
Full performance level is the GS-08.

Pay range at the GS-06 level is: $44,736 - $58,159
Pay range at the GS-07 level is: $49,713 - $64,628
Pay range at the GS-08 level is: $55,054 - $71,569

Duties

  • Serves as a member of the survey team supporting civil works, inter-agency, and military projects using knowledge of geodetic, topographic, and bathymetric surveying processes and procedures.
  • Utilizes Microsoft Office suite to create, track, and update standard operating procedures, presentations, scheduled equipment calibrations, and spreadsheets for mathematical calculations.
  • Operates various types of Survey equipment and computer systems such as such as sonars, theodolites, total stations, RTK systems and data collectors and software.
  • Prepares field notes, reference maps, sketches, surveying engineering computations, data processing, coordinate calculations, and geodetic control work for surveying and engineering projects.
  • Integrates, configures, and calibrates surveying engineering systems for hydrographic, topographic, and geodetic surveying.
  • Process, evaluate, and edits field data for use in a CADD and Geospatial Information System for mapping, design, and analysis.

Conditions of Employment

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • All Army personnel will comply with safety regulations, occupational safety and health standards, and other safety directives and orders.
  • Incumbent of this position must be enrolled in the Hearing Conservation Program and must undergo pre-employment, annual and pre-termination audiograms. (per NAOSA DF dtd 31 May 84)and must pass pre-employment and annual medical examination.
  • Incumbent is required to operate a motor vehicle; therefore, must have and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Work assignments involve working outside, standing, climbing, and walking through rugged terrain.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a USACE license for the operation of motorboats less than 26 feet within 6 months of employment.
  • Incumbent is required to travel to perform duties. Travel could be as much as 200 days a year.
  • Incumbent must be able to enter and exit through boat space through hatches that have a width of 15 in., lifting scientific and surveying equipment that weigh 50 lbs, and sustained physical effort when operating a 20 lbs chainsaw.
  • This position is not telework eligible.
  • This position has an on-call requirement

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-6 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience includes 1) participating in the performance of hydrographic and topographic surveys, 2) proficient using fiberglass survey tape for measuring distances and a level and stadia rod to measure vertical distances, and 3) proficient use of MS Word and MS Excel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05 or above).

GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience includes specialized experience at the GS-06 level and 1) collecting hydrographic and topographic survey data, 2) leading a team to establish horizontal and vertical coordinates on a benchmark, 3) proficient using sound velocity equipment, hydrographic computer systems, theodolites, survey rods and prisms. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06 or above).

GS-08 Specialized Experience: One year of specialize experience includes specialized experience at the GS-07 level and 1) leading a team in the performance of routine hydrographic surveys and topographic surveys, 2) processing hydrographic data and topographic data, and 3) maintaining survey equipment This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07 or above).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

You will also be evaluated on your:
(1) Knowledge and experience collecting and processing hydrographic and topographic survey data.
(2) Written and verbal communication of progress and findings/conclusions.
(3) Proficiency using MS Windows survey computer systems and software such as HYAPCK, AutoCADD, MS Word, and MS Excel.
(4) Working collaboratively.
(5) Demonstrated experience working in the field collecting survey data in a variety of terrain and conditions.
