Summary

ORGANIZATIONAL LOCATION: Great Plains Area, Pine Ridge Service Unit, Facilities Department. Position is located in Pine Ridge, SD. The position is responsible for maintaining the appearance, safety, and functionality of outdoor facility areas, within direction provided by the Maintenance Foreman. The position involves routine landscaping, gardening, lawn care and minor maintenance duties.

This job will close when we have received 25 applications which may be sooner than the closing date.

Duties

  • Performing care and maintenance of lawn areas such as; maintaining growing lawns in the sodden and seeded areas, daily clean-up of trash and debris, seasonal fertilization of lawn and sod areas, conduct visual inspection for pest on sod/seeded lawns and native grass areas, removal of debris from fallen sod and seeded areas.
  • Performing care and maintenance of trees an shrubs areas such as; maintaining healthy and growing trees and shrubs, seasonally inspect all trees and shrubs, consult with area nurseries and County Extension Agents on shrubs infestation, conduct seasonal pruning of tree and shrubs.
  • Perform operation and maintenance of drip irrigation system such as; inspect and maintaining lawn irrigation systems to ensure proper operation, conduct tasks of cleaning, repairing or replacement of components of sprinkler heads, valves, drip lines, reducers and main piping are maintained safely.
  • Valid driver's license required (must be able to operate government vehicles and/or equipment).

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 40 hours per week. On-call hours may be required.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify for this position you must meet the following screen-out element:
  • Ability to do the work without more than normal supervision. You may meet this requirement if you have experience and/or training to perform routine duties of a groundkeeper grounds maintenance in operating and maintaining landscaping equipment and irrigation system, maintain lawns, gardens, trees and shrubs through mowing, trimming, planting and fertilizing, inspect grounds for hazards repair needs, and report maintenance issues.
This screen-out element is a critical self-assessment of the applicant's experience and is essential for satisfactory job performance.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the above, qualifications will also be determined by comparing your application to the responses on the Assessment Questionnaire against the guidelines found in the Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations, WG-3502, series. The questionnaire will assess how your knowledge, skills, and abilities match what the position calls for. The elements are as follows:

  • Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean and in order)

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
