Summary

This position is located in the Fitness, Sports and Aquatics division, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, Naval Station Mayport, Florida. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of duties to maintain athletic fields and other outdoor recreational facilities to ensure safety and cleanliness for patrons.

Duties

  • Operates gas and diesel-powered tractor, drawn and tractor powered mowing equipment, including a 3, 5, 7, and 9 gang real mower, off-set counter-balanced rotary mower, sand trap rake, sweeper, spiker, verticutter, aerator, top dresser, fertilizer spreader, sod cutter, stump remover, front-end loader, back-hoe, and grading blade.
  • Operates a dump truck and other types of heavy-duty equipment needed to do daily maintenance, make special repairs, construct new tees, greens, or hazards, and to do tree pruning, trimming, or planting.
  • Mows lawns, fairways, roughs, and tees at designated cuts including rough terrains; removes debris, dead grass, broken tree limbs, leaves, and keeps assigned areas clean, presentable, and as attractive as possible, depending on the season and weather conditions.
  • Applies the proper amounts of fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and nemacides according to manufacturer's directions and instructions.
  • Digs trenches, cleans ditches and removes weeds around buildings, fences, shelters, tee markers, yardage identification markers, trees, shrubbery, cart paths, sidewalks, and other such locations, using hand tools such as a shovel, hoe, rake, pruning sheers, and other types of specialized hand tools.
  • Maintains, repairs, and installs watering system lines, sprinkler heads, and low voltage electric lines and switches associated with automatic watering systems.
  • Operates a truckster, trap trimmer, portable pump, utility mowers, weed eaters, and several types of hand tools including an axe, crowbar, cup cutter, wheelbarrow, sod edger, sod lifter, shovel, spade, rake, pick, pruners, tree saw, animal traps, and watering accessories such as hoses, nozzles, sprinklers, and plumbing tools.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on gas- and diesel-powered machinery, and electric powered carts, buffers, and vacuum cleaners, and other types of mechanical equipment and hand tools used to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities.

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.

Specialized experience directly related to the duties described above. Qualifying experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to adjust and operate a gas and diesel tractor and specialized equipment and to be able to manipulate both tractor and hydraulic controlled equipment simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of equipment and correct attachment methods, their power requirements, braking and turning capacities, power ratios and operating speeds.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance to equipment, i.e., oils and grease.
  • Ability to recognize changes in turf conditions.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and limited first aid.

All individuals involved in the provision of child care services on a Department of Navy (DON) installation or in a DON-sanctioned program must complete the Installation Records Check (IRC).
