To qualify for a
Transportation Assistant, your resume and supporting documentation must support:
A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-06 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. To qualify at the GS-07 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
GS-06:
- Determines the most efficient economical rates and routes to final destination involving domestic inbound and export shipments.
- Classifies, rates, routes, and moves a wide range of commodities including hazardous material.
- Researches an extensive body of transportation regulations, methods, and practices to develop and compile a wide range of transportation data necessary for reports and resolving a wide range of problems.
GS-07:
- Executes application of transportation regulations, policies, methods, procedures, and practices.
- Reviews rules and manuals governing entitlements, and documentation requirements for domestic and/or foreign relocation/freight shipments within established timeframes.
- Determines the appropriate shipping methods and coordinates with various personnel on needs for special packaging, handling, loading, and other equipment including extremely fragile, high hazard, or temperature sensitive materials.
B. Education Substitution: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Demands: Stands on hard surfaces for extended periods of time. Work requires bending, stooping, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions, many times all at the same time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds which may be bulky, stored on pallets. Uses weight handling equipment or receives assistance from other workers for items heavier than 40 pounds. Moderate physical effort is used in operating hand and foot controls when operating materials handling equipment.
Work Environment: The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with coworkers and be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Works outside and inside in areas that are hot, damp, cold, drafty, and poorly lighted. Subject to cuts, scrapes, bruises, muscle strain, noise, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock. The incumbent is required to go to warehouses and loading docks to obtain information and must exercise care when working around materials handling equipment, and freight. The incumbent is required to wear protective clothing or equipment. Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain all appropriate state and government licenses. Working conditions are a normal part of the job and are considered in the evaluation of the position.
