Candidates must be currently enrolled in a law degree program and seeking a degree in a qualifying education institution on a half- to full-time basis. Enrollment must be with an accredited educational institution. Students must be in good academic standing.

Duties

This exciting opportunity is available for law school students during the Fall 2026 academic term (September through December). Some things you should know:

  • This position may provide support to one of the following USPTO business units: the Office of General Counsel, the Office of Policy and Internal Affairs, the Patent and Trial Appeal Board, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, Patents or Trademarks.
  • The duties assigned to this position are authorized to be performed in the United States (currently defined as the fifty states and the District of Columbia) and Puerto Rico.
  • This position operates under a flexible hybrid remote/telework model, allowing law externs to complete the majority of their legal research and support work from their home campuses, with occasional in-person visits to the Alexandria campus as needed.

Qualifications

To be eligible for this position, you must: (1) be a U.S. Citizen or National; (2) currently enrolled in law school as a 1st, 2nd or 3rd year law student with at least a 2.75 grade point average -- 1st year law students must have completed one semester; (3) be in good academic standing.

The ideal candidates should possess experience that includes performing legal research; and/or the ability to interpret, analyze various issues/matters; and/or strong oral and written communication skills.

If selected, the above eligibility requirements must be maintained throughout the period of employment.

All education beyond high school must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Education

Education: You must be enrolled in an accredited law school and taking at least a half-time academic course load. The definition of half-time is the definition provided by the school in which you are enrolled.

Students must be in good academic standing GPA of 2.75 or higher.

If this position requires proof of higher education, or you are substituting education for experience, you must submit an unofficial transcript or a list of courses that includes the following information: name of accredited institution, grades earned, completion dates, and quarter and semester hours earned. Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. Please refer to General Schedule Qualification Policies for more information. You are not required to submit official documents at this time; copies are sufficient.

Special Instructions for Foreign Education: Qualifying education from colleges and universities in foreign countries must be evaluated in terms of equivalency to that acquired in U.S. colleges and universities. Applicants educated in whole or in part in foreign countries must submit sufficient evidence, including transcripts, to an accredited private organization for an equivalency evaluation of course work and degree. A listing of these accredited organizations can be found on the Department of Education's website - US Department of Education. Another listing of services that can perform this evaluation is available at the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) website. You must provide a copy of the letter containing the results of the equivalency evaluation with a course by course listing along with your application. Failure to provide such documentation when requested will result in lost consideration.

NOTE: Only education and experience acquired before the filing deadline will be considered. Report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
