Summary

The Utility Systems Repairer Operator has the overall responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the Boiler Plant, Air Conditioning Plant, and the Engineering Control Center at the JJPVAMC. Duties include operate, repair, maintain, and troubleshoot Air Conditioning Utility Systems, Boiler Plant Utility Systems, and responds to all emergency and other incident calls. The Utility Systems Operator is the "operator in charge" of the Air Conditioning and Boiler Plant Utility Systems.

Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for repairs in the boiler plant, both major and minor. These consists of boiler cleaning and inspection; brick and refractory replacement and repair of burner cones, boiler linings; realignment of steam piping and fuel oil piping; pump replacement, repacking and replacement of mechanical seals, and repair; electrical trouble shooting and minor repair; resetting and repairing pneumatic control valves; repair and replacement of steam traps, gauges, sight-glasses, steam regulators and valves, electric main feed water pumps and steam driven feed water pump.
  • Responsible for both minor and major repairs on Air Conditioning Plants and auxiliary equipment. These consist of re-tubing evaporators, condensers, pumps, motors and motor controls, injection chemical pumps, tower fans, controls, reduction gear boxes, electrical repairs and trouble shooting.
  • Monitors fuel oil underground storage tanks and fuel oil delivery.
  • Tests and treats boiler water, feed water, condensate return water, cooling tower water and city water as per Facility instructions and manufacturers recommendations and adjusting pump settings to maintain concentration of chemicals within the systems.
  • Operates, monitors and repair low pressure air compressors and air driers to sustain continuous supply of clean dry air for pneumatic controls of Boiler Plant, Air Conditioning Plant and Air Handling Units providing environment-controlled climate throughout a Facility.
  • Keeps and maintains all daily records of plant operations and monitors fire alarm systems.
  • Responds to any emergency calls throughout the medical center such as fire alarm system, plumbing, electrical, heating, cooling and hazard spills.
  • Operates high voltage switchgear that provide electricity to the Medical Center.
  • The incumbent performs other duties as assigned, normally of a related nature.
  • Incumbent is required to work rotating shifts.
Work Schedule: 8am - 4pm / 4pm - 12am / 12am - 8am / alternating shifts and days off.

Physical Requirements: The position involves working with heights; working with moving parts and rotating machinery; electrical apparatus; noisy machines. Work is performed inside where the area is usually dry and heated, but short periods of time may be spent exposed to extreme and abnormal temperatures. The incumbent is exposed to greasy and dirty work as well as fumes from refrigerants and combustible gases. Hazards include the possibility of electrical shock, injury to eyes from handling chemicals and injury from burns in connection with steam piping and valves. The employee is also required to work rotating shifts.
