Duties

As a WELDER (TITLE 32), WG-3703-10, you will perform welding duties using electric, acetylene, and/or inert gas shielded welding processes, pre-heating, brazing, head welding, tack welding, flame cutting, pressure welding, and heat treating. Use templates, jigs, blueprints, and other guides to repair, modify, or fabricate metal items including repair of light or intricately made mechanical parts, which must fit in assemblies where close tolerances are required. Makes numerous types of joints using flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions on light and heavy equipment such as axles, frames, gun mounts and components, carriers, tanks, metal decks constructed of a variety of weldable metals. Welds or reinforces heavy armor plate. Performs precision welding on jigs, dies, engineering and automotive equipment.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling. Work may be done in awkward and cramped positions such as when welding in hard to reach places. Frequently handles objects weighing up to 40 pounds and, occasionally, objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Lifts and carries heavier items with assistance.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather, and in areas that are noisy, dirty, and smoky. Exposed to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, heat, flying sparks, and the glare of torches and heated materials. There is possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns, broken bones, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects. There is also discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves, and flash shield or eye goggles.

  • Security Clearance requirements are determined by position and/or MOS/AFSC compatibility.
  • May be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

Qualifications

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: This position is in the Excepted Federal Civil Service "under the authority of 32 U.S.C. 709" and is open to Category 1 & 3 Only. Category 1: All permanent/indefinite (T32 and T5) technicians employed by the agency WITH dual FL National Guard military membership; Category 3: All current military members of the Florida National Guard. First consideration will be given to Category 1.

PCS: Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs, MAY be authorized. Authorization for payment of PCS expenses will be granted ONLY after determination is made that payment is in the best interest of the Florida National Guard.

Recruitment / Relocation: Incentive MAY be authorized. ONLY after determination is made that payment is in the best interest of the Florida National Guard.

FLARNG BUS Code NG5022: This position is "included" in the bargaining unit and eligible for labor organization representation. The current exclusive representative is The Association of Civilian Technicians, Chapter 87 and the President is Mr. Michael Ortmayer at actch87@gmail.com.

MILITARY GRADES: Enlisted, E1 thru E7

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must have experience or training that has provided the candidate with the basic knowledge of welding processes. Must have knowledge of technical orders, blueprints, and specifications.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG10 Must have at least 18 months of experience or training, demonstrating the application of a variety of electric resistance welding processes and equipment. Experience in using accepted trade methods and a variety of manual welding processes to weld all types of commonly used metals in various shapes, sizes, and thicknesses. Experience using a wider range of metal welding processes to make more difficult welds meeting close tolerance, strength, and other requirements. These welds may be in hard-to-reach places. Experience which allows the welder to devise special jigs and fixtures to hold the parts to be welded. Experience which demonstrates knowledge of several related trade procedures. Experience which enables the lay out and planning of work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders.

TEMPORARY PROMOTION- For Title 32 selectees only: This is an obligated position (incumbent is on a military tour). If a permanent employee in the Title 32 excepted civil service accepts this position, he/she will retain their permanent status AND return to their previous Title 32 position once incumbent returns from military duty. If the military tour member, who has reemployment rights to this position, does not exercise his/her reemployment rights within 5 years, the selected individual may remain in this position without further competition.

INDEFINITE APPOINTMENT-For Current Title 5 selectees only: This is an obligated position (incumbent is on a military tour). If an on-board individual employed in the Title 5 excepted civil service accepts this position, he/she will receive an indefinite appointment (Tenure 3). If a Reduction-In-Force occurs and/or the military tour member exercises reemployment rights to this position, the indefinite appointee will have no reemployment rights to any other position and may be separated. If the military tour member, having reemployment rights to this position, does not exercise his/her rights within 5 years, this position may be converted to a permanent status without further competition.

INDEFINITE APPOINTMENT-State National Guard Members (Not Current T5 or T32 Onboard) This is an obligated position (incumbent is on a military tour), selectee will receive an indefinite appointment (Tenure 3). If a Reduction-In-Force occurs and/or the military tour member exercises reemployment right to this position, the indefinite appointee will have no reemployment rights to any other position and may be separated. If the military tour member, having reemployment rights to this position, does not exercise his/her rights within 5 years, this position may be converted to a permanent status without further competition.
