Summary

About the Position: Serve as a Welder on Ft Leavenworth utilizing knowledge of welding standards and a variety of metals and alloys and how they react to different welding techniques and processes.

Duties

  • Perform welding work using electric, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes on metals and alloys such as copper, brass, aluminum, steel, iron, etc., from blueprints, sketches, specifications and oral instructions.
  • Weld high pressure (i.e. up to 125 psi at 350 degrees Fahrenheit steam lines.
  • Work involves planning, layout of work, positioning and clamping work, pre-heating metal and maintaining temperature to prevent distortion.
  • Work with light, heavy gauge and hardened metals, welding all the various types of weldable items assigned, using flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions.
  • Use templates, jigs, blueprints and other guides to repair, modify or fabricate metal items for all types of fixed and mobile equipment.
  • Make a wide range of welds from simple to precision welding; determining disassembly or repair necessary and materials to be used.
  • Fabricate, assemble, paint, and install a variety of articles of sheet metal such as ducts, shelves, metal doors, etc.

  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs with assistance in the regular performance of duties.
  • The incumbent is required to walk, stand, bend, kneel, climb ladders and scaffolds and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • This position works inside and outside in inclement weather and is subject to dirt, dust, grease, paint fumes, cuts and bruises from hand and power tools, minor electric shock and danger of falls from ladders.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

Qualifications

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the Department of Defense (DOD) Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Welder (Public Notice Flyer) without more than normal supervision. Qualifying experience includes: (1) performing welding using electric arc, oxyacetylene, plasma cutting and inert gas shielded processes; (2) welding on metals and alloys such as copper, brass, aluminum, steel, and iron; AND (3) welding from blueprints, sketches, specifications, and oral instructions.

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision.
  • Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading).
  • Knowledge of Metals.
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
Physical Effort:
  • Frequently lifts moderately heavy and sometimes bulky metal articles.
  • Work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and generally working in awkward and cramped positionswhen welding in hard to reach places.
Working Conditions:
  • Works inside in areas that are noisy, greasy, dirty and smoky.
  • Constant exposure to dirt, grease, noise, odors, smoke and fumes with requirement for protective clothing such as welding masks,aprons, and gloves.
  • Work is usually performed on concrete floors or as required on or in equipment being repaired.
  • Incumbent is exposed to danger to skin and eyes from flying metal chips, abrasive particles, and hot metal; skin irritation from contactwith coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds; and danger to fingers, hands, and other parts of the body from cutting tools,grinding wheels, rotating work pieces, and moving parts of machines.
  • Subject to burns and eye injury when welding metal surfaces.
  • Danger from electric shock and falls from scaffolds or ladders, and intra or ultra violet rays and fumes and gases.

The primary objective of this DHA is to appoint qualified candidates who are not existing DoD competitive service employees withpermanent status. Category rating, veteran's preference, military spouse preference, and traditional rating and ranking of applicants ARE NOT applicable to this vacancy.
