This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Performs common, sub journeyman skill and knowledge of the welding trade to complete assigned work.

Duties

  • Perform a variety of welding duties by operating multiple types of welding equipment and/or machines.
  • Repair common metal parts assemblies or components of automotive, engineer or combat vehicles, electronic, hydraulic mechanical or other equipment, containers, structures or facilities using one or more welding process.
  • Follow proper welding preparation practices for the area to be welded by cleaning, fitting, chipping, grinding, cutting, slag removal, and grinds welds when required.
  • Select proper tools, welding materials, heat range, feed for a variety of metals and thicknesses to provide proper weldments, penetration, and fusion.
  • Initiate corrosion control prevention tasks by cleaning, chipping, grinding, cutting, sanding, and painting as required.
  • Utilize computers in the performance of their duties for personnel matters such as training, labor accounting, leave requests, employee benefits, counseling and evaluations, as well as for equipment testing and technical manuals.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. Must possess and maintain an appropriate valid civilian and military drivers license.
  • Incumbent will have to pass a pre-employment physical examination to meet the physical effort requirements of this position. An annual physical or medical surveillance examination will be required.
  • Position occasionally requires the wearing of respiratory protective devices. Employees may not have beards, sideburns, or other hair that will negate the effectiveness of the respiratory equipment by preventing an effective face-to-face piece seal.
  • Position requires employee to wear protective equipment such as welder's apron, gloves, flash shield hood, eye goggles, ear plugs, hard hats, safety toe shoes, respirators, and other safety devices which may be uncomfortable.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Welding Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. Apply welding trade techniques and related processes such as brazing, soldering or flame-cutting with rough tolerances; research technical manuals to complete welding repairs; andimplement basic tasks within the machinist trade, i.e., drilling, lathing and milling. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, crawling and sometimes working in cramped and awkward positions. The work involves regular lifting, carrying and/or holding objects weighing from 20 to 50 pounds; and occasionally lifting objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds to set up work and equipment needed to complete tasks.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Welding and related work may be performed indoors or outdoors, sometimes in bad weather, in areas which are noisy, dirty or smoky. Work involves exposure to grease, fumes, heat, flying sparks or glare and may include exposure to infrared and/or ultraviolet radiation; as well as hazards from electric shock, burns, cuts, eye and other injuries. There is discomfort from wearing protective equipment such as goggles welding helmets, face shields, aprons, gloves, respirators, or other protective clothing or equipment.
