Summary

Join the Indian Health Service as a X-Ray Technologist (CT) (Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist) and provide essential imaging services in a mission-driven healthcare environment. Perform CT and diagnostic radiology procedures, support trauma and emergency care, and help deliver quality patient care to American Indian communities.

A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

Clarification from the agency

The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3.

Duties

  • Perform Computed Tomography (CT) examinations using advanced imaging protocols for a variety of patient conditions.
  • Administer and monitor contrast materials while ensuring patient safety during imaging procedures.
  • Operate CT equipment, select technical factors, and produce diagnostic-quality images.
  • Perform quality control, radiation safety, and troubleshooting activities to support CT operations.
  • Collaborate with radiologists and providers while maintaining accurate electronic imaging documentation.

On-call hours or standby duty may be required. Position may be subject to rotating shifts: days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

IHS Selectees that will work in an IHS health care facility may be subject to Employee Health Policies related to Measles and Rubella, and seasonal influenza immunizations. Vaccine exemption requests may be available according to the National and/or Service Unit guidance.

Background Investigation Requirement:
This position requires the successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment.

A background investigation is a standard process used by the Federal Government to verify an individual's identity, employment history, education, and other relevant information to determine suitability for Federal service.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Education and Certification Requirements - Applicants must meet the credentialing requirements of Public Law 97-35 and 42 CFR Part 75 for radiologic personnel. This includes successful completion of an accredited radiologic technology educational program and current certification/registration as a radiographer.

Note: Certain exceptions may apply: 1) Individuals employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel before January 13, 1986, may qualify based on evidence of current or satisfactory performance, or certification from a licensed practitioner authorized to prescribe radiologic procedures (such as a physician, osteopath, dentist, podiatrist, or chiropractor). 2) Individuals first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after January 13, 1986, may qualify if they completed training or practiced in a state or foreign jurisdiction where accreditation or licensure was not available in that specialty at the time. Applicants must provide acceptable evidence of training, experience, and competency as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
performing routine CT examinations using established imaging protocols and independently conducting routine and complex radiographic examinations, including trauma, fluoroscopic, surgical, and portable studies; preparing and positioning patients for imaging procedures; operating CT and radiographic equipment to obtain diagnostic-quality images; assisting with contrast material administration and patient monitoring; adapting imaging techniques for patient condition; maintaining radiology documentation; identifying equipment malfunctions; and supporting radiation safety, quality assurance, infection control, and radiology operations activities.

GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: independently performing CT examinations using advanced imaging protocols; adapting procedures for trauma and critically ill patients; selecting technical factors, operating CT scanners, and reconstructing diagnostic images; administering contrast materials and monitoring patients for adverse reactions; performing quality control and radiation dose monitoring activities; troubleshooting CT equipment issues; collaborating with radiologists and providers on imaging protocols; and maintaining compliance with radiation safety, accreditation, and electronic documentation requirements.
OR
Two (2) years (36 semester hours) of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position.
OR
A master's degree or equivalent degree in a field that is directly related to the work of the position.
Or
A combination of graduate education and specialized experience. Only graduate education in excess of the first year (18 semester hours) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
