Summary
The Staff Audiologist position is located in the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Service of the Veterans Affairs Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS), one of the largest Veterans Affairs facilities in the country. We are staffing our new, state-of-the-art audiology clinic, which is currently one of our largest sites of care in audiology.
Duties
This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-12. At the GS-11 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-12. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of fund.
The Staff Audiologist position at this level plans, conducts, and coordinates aspects of diagnostic evaluations and therapeutic and rehabilitative services for Veterans with hearing loss and hearing disorders. Service delivery is in person and via telehealth. We are looking for audiologists with all-around clinical and hearing aid fitting skills, as well as those specializing in vestibular testing, cochlear implant testing and treatment, tinnitus testing and treatment, and auditory processing disorders.
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Conducts, plans, and coordinates clinical and administrative aspects of a full range of services associated with contemporary audiology practice including comprehensive hearing testing, hearing aid prescription and management, and Compensation and Pension hearing examinations.
- Responsible for independent diagnostic assessment and evaluation of cases that are referred to the Audiology Section without limitation as to difficulty or complexity.
- Conducts interviews with the patients and appropriate family members or friends, and selects, administers, and interprets the diagnostic test results necessary to detect and evaluate the presence of a hearing disorder.
- Assesses patient conditions from examination, observation, and consultation with other members of an interdisciplinary health care team.
- Utilizes diagnostic and evaluative procedures and techniques consistent with contemporary audiology practices.
- Develops an appropriate plan of care and delivering treatment as designed and consistent with principles of evidence-based practice.
- Documents evaluation and treatment actions and outcomes in appropriate formats in a timely manner.
- Optimizes clinical safety and efficiency by maintaining supplies, equipment in good working order.
- Serves as a consultant to other facility personnel involving the most difficult and complex cases.
- Serves as a recognized subject matter expert on matters related to audiology and hearing disorders.
- Attends staff meetings and inter-disciplinary health care team meetings as appropriate, review policies and procedures, and attends in-service training.
- Participates in research activities pertinent to audiology.
- Other duties as assigned.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
A. United States Citizenship: You must be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7407(a).
B. English Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
C. Education: The individual must meet at least one of the following requirements below. NOTE: all applicants must submit a copy of their transcripts.
- Doctor of Audiology (AuD) from an audiology program recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The CAA is the only accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit entry-level audiology programs. OR;
- Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the USDE.
NOTE: Effective January 1, 2007, the CAA in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology of ASHA accredits only doctoral degree or AuD programs in audiology.
Foreign Education: To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization specializing in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials. Such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. programs.
D. Licensure Requirement: Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia. NOTE: all applicants must provide a copy of their licensure with their application.
E. Grandfathering Provision: may qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
F. Drivers License: A current, valid state-issued driver's license is required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your current, valid state-issued driver's license.
G. Preferred Experience: Experience working with cochlear implants and/or vestibular evaluations/treatment.
H. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must meet the following grade requirements.
Audiologist, GS-11: Employees at this grade level serve in audiologist entry-level developmental positions. Audiologists perform audiology assessment and treatment intervention, exercise clinical judgment, adapt clinical procedures and techniques and document in the medical record appropriate information related to patient care.
- Education Requirement: None beyond the basic requirements of this position.
- Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the basic requirements, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
- Knowledge of principles and techniques in the assessment and treatment of auditory and balance disorders.
- Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice as defined by the American Academy of Audiology or the ASHA.
- Ability to interact with patients, families and other health care professionals.

Audiologist, GS-12: This is the full performance level for staff audiologists. At this level, audiologists are licensed to practice independently in the provision of audiologic services, consulting with peers and supervisors as appropriate. Audiologists serve as consultants to other health care professionals and are recognized subject matter experts on matters related to hearing, tinnitus and balance disorders.
- Experience Requirement: must have completion of one year of professional experience comparable to the next lower grade level of GS-11. NOTE: Experience is only creditable if it is postdoctoral experience performing the duties of a professional audiologist and must be directly related to the duties to be performed.
- Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
- Skill in determining nature, type and severity of hearing/communication /vestibular disorders.
- Skill in counseling patients and family members regarding management of hearing/communication/vestibular disorders.
- Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional audiology to other health care professionals.
- Ability to independently apply professional contemporary audiologic treatments to the full range of patient populations.
