The primary purpose of this position is to function as a Staff Dentist performing a range of professional dental duties commonly encountered with dental diseases or health requiring standard corrective, preventative, restorative or rehabilitative care.

Duties
This position is located within a hospital or healthcare facility for the Billings Area Indian Health Service. The incumbent reports to the Supervisory Dental Officer or designee.
- Make clinical and radiographic examinations of the oral and soft tissues and a diagnosis of pathological or irregular conditions.
- Administer local anesthesia, and/or nitrous oxide analgesia.
- Perform routine and moderately complicated tooth extractions, including surgical procedures.
- Perform examinations, make diagnoses and prescribe treatment plans for patients.
- Recognize and refer patients for specialty treatment as required.
- Examine, diagnose, and treat diseases, injuries, and malformation of teeth and gums.
- Plan and carry-out dental health programs for oral disease prevention and patient education.

Applicants who meet the above basic requirements qualify for the GS-11 grade level.
Additional Requirements for the GS-12 (or equivalent) Grade Level
In addition to the above Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) level, applicants must complete a 2-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science; or equivalent experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, and/or training.
Examples of specialized experience at the GS-12 grade level
- Evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience may include the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth, administering anesthetics, writing prescriptions; and performing other requirements of the position.
Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
