Summary

The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo.  This position is located in the National Zoo and Conversation Biology Institute (NZCBI), National Zoological Park (NZP), Under Secretary for Science and Research, Smithsonian Institution (SI). NZCBI plays a leading role in the Smithsonian’s global efforts to save wildlife species from extinction and train future generations of conservationists.

Duties

The purpose of this Ecologist position is to conceive, plan, and conduct highly specialized research in basic and applied ecology of grasslands.

In this position, you will:

  • Evaluate and assess the changes of soils occurring in response to rewilding, and restoration; research changes in herbivore regimes, management, microclimate and altered biogeochemistry; and conduct studies based on fieldwork analysis to include data from other institutions/partners.
  • Design and conduct field sampling measure in changes of soil; and analyze data collected using computerized statistical graphs applying the findings.
  • Develop/Conduct research of scientific research of projects of grasslands globally; and identify and implement a set of indictors for data collection and distribute across network.
  • Prepare written reports and publish scientific papers of results and experiments; and publish scholarly reports of theoretical nature studies.
  • Serve as a consultant/advisor on professional matters in relation to soil, ecology, conservation of grassland systems; assist with guidance/teaching of student technicians on research projects; and train staff members, interns, fellow, student in theory and practical use of specialized equipment.
  • Assist in preparation of grant proposals; review research proposals, manuscripts, and publications as requested; and attend and participate in National/International Scientific Conferences, seminars, and societies.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications (0408 series):

Degree: Biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as experience researching basic and applied ecology of grasslands; analyzing and managing complex statistical scientific data; and preparing, presenting, and publishing scientific reports.

Or Education: 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online multiple-choice questions that assess your experience, education, and/or training for the job-related competencies below:

  • Serve as consultant/advisor on professional relation of soil, grassland systems providing guidance to technicians on findings.
  • Knowledge of preparing proposals for grants; review publications/manuscripts.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category.
