Summary
This position is a Fish and Wildlife Biologist, GS-0401-11, for the R6-Colorado Ecological Services Field Office. The preferred location for this position is Lakewood, CO, though other locations in Eastern Colorado will be considered.
If selected, you may be placed at a regional or field office, current duty station, or other DOI worksite within Eastern Colorado (east of the Continental Divide) at the discretion of management. Questions regarding placement should be saved for the interview.

Duties
We are seeking talented applicants with a firm grounding in biological sciences and skilled in partnership-building, writing, and communication to serve as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist, GS-0401-11. This position will work on a variety of issues relating to conservation of wildlife, fish, plants, and their habitats, with a focus on conservation of Preble's meadow jumping mouse.
As a Fish and Wildlife Biologist your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
- Collaborating and communicating effectively with a range of people and partners that hold different opinions and beliefs related to conservation of species and habitat.
- Providing biological expertise on a variety of issues relating to conservation, restoration, and recovery of fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats, especially related to Preble's meadow jumping mouse.
- Applying the requirements of the Endangered Species Act and pertinent environmental regulations, policies, and procedures governing an endangered species program, such as interagency consultation (e.g., biological opinions), listing packages, recovery plans, conservation agreements (e.g., Habitat Conservation Plans), and other related documents.
- Participating in diverse, complex, and multi-disciplinary planning efforts to achieve Service policies, objectives, and goals.
- Reviewing ecological information to evaluate impacts from land and water resource development actions on federal trust resources (i.e., federally protected species and migratory birds), primarily in sagebrush and riparian ecosystems.
- Preparing various types of written communication ranging from emails and general correspondence to more technical compliance documents and reports.

Qualifications
Only experience and education obtained by 05/02/2024 will be considered.
In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.
Basic Requirement:
- Possess a bachelors degree or higher in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR
- Possess a combination of education and experience that included coursework equivalent to a major (i.e. 24 semester/36 quarter hours or school equivalent) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines as shown in A above, PLUS appropriate experience or additional education, and in combination equals 100% of the basic requirements.
Minimum Qualification [GS-11]
- Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level or higher in the federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes: (1) conducting investigations of moderate complexity to determine the impact of various land and/or water development projects upon the fish and/or wildlife resources and their habitats; (2) negotiating alternative actions or mitigation measures; (3) assisting in developing habitat conservation or restoration projects; (4) preparing biological portions of environmental assessment/impact statements or comprehensive resource planning reports; and (5) implementing federal environmental laws (i.e., Endangered Species Act, National Forest Management Act, Federal Land Policy and Management Act, Clean Water Act, Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act, and/or National Environmental Policy Act) as well as regulations and policies involving natural resources. OR
- Possess three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree -OR- have earned a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or closely related field which provided the knowledge skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position. OR
- A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
