JOB TITLE:              Recreation Specialist

BUSINESS TITLE:  Gymnastics Coach

This position's pay level is NF-02/03.  At the entry level, the incumbent will perform substantially the same duties and responsibilities in the developmental capacity under closer supervision.  The incumbent is required to successfully complete all education and training requirements, meet all regulatory requirements, and be recommended by the supervisor prior to advancement to the target grade level. This position will advance to the target level without competition.

INTRODUCTION:

This position is located within the Gymnastics Program, Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) Division, Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Butler. The primary function of the position is to serve as a Gymnastics Coach and to follow skill sets, lesson plans and training for children and teens in order to stimulate youth to participate in and experience a variety of ongoing activities that will improve and maintain their physical well-being and promote good lifetime health maintenance skills.  The program serves a diverse population of active duty, reserve, and retired military, their family members, civilians, and other authorized customers, to include the local national community in and around the installation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leads, follows, organizes, coordinates and directs comprehensive gymnastics lesson plans for patrons and the Gymnastics Program, including major and minor events, individual and group lessons, and competitive events for a moderately large overseas area for children and youth age 10 months to 17 years of age.  Adheres to gymnastics events and follows all procedures and policies set forth by the Gymnastics Program Director. Ensures that programs are properly communicated, organized and supported to maintain a high level of patron satisfaction and encourage their long-term participation. Ensures controlled class management of gymnasts and remains in an active position of observation and coaching.  Displays a respectful, positive and professional interactions with customers.

Must help organize and participate in events related to the gymnastics program to include but not limited to: End of the Year Shows, Holiday Programs, Skill Sessions & Clinics. Actively participates and follows planned activities according to their specific event.

Follows, executes, and provides assistance with Gymnastics Program events, including recreation and competitive competitions/shows, career fairs, and any other gymnastics related programs that are conducted or participated in by MCCS.  Assists with any/all activities associated with the MCCS Gymnastics Program.

Upholds all Gymnastics Program policies, procedures, standards and code of conduct. Fulfills any functions designated by the Gymnastics Program Director for the betterment of the program and aids in the ability of the Gymnastics Program to meet its mission.

Skilled in forward thinking and ability to identify problems or issues and develop effective solutions. Ability to work with a growing program and participate in collaborative activities.

Ensures facilities are properly prepared for use, assists as necessary, and performs minor maintenance as required.  Ensures that facilities are designed and prepared according to the specific governing rules of that sport and league.  Assists in maintaining gymnastics facility, such as equipment, viewing area and floor space, to ensure area and equipment is in proper working condition.

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy.  Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner in person, on the phone, emails, and via approved social media sites.  Acknowledges customers, smiles and makes eye contact.  Asks questions to determine, verify and solve problems.  Checks for satisfaction on the quality of goods and services.  Takes action to solve problems quickly.  Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise.  

Adheres to safety regulations and standards.  Uses required safety equipment, and observes safe work procedures.  Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor.

Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:


1. Must be at least 18 years old and have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school. (Valid documentation will be required upon hire)

2. To be hired at NF2, 
Candidate must have a minimum of one year experience in gymnastics or fitness/athletics related field.

To be hired at NF3, 
Candidate must have a minimum of three years experience in coaching gymnastics and/or physical fitness/athletic program with children; experience specifically related to gymnastics is preferred, but not required.

3. Must be able to obtain CPR/First Aid/AED certification.

4. Must be able to perform prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, twisting, stooping, balancing, climbing, heavy lifting and carrying objects weighing 45 pounds (20 kg) without assistance. Physical demands: hand eye coordination, spotting, lifting, fine manipulation skills to operate computers and office equipment for required training, instruction and coaching.

5. Must possess or able to obtain, within 1 month of hiring, Introductory Membership certification from nationally accredited certifying organization, to include: USA Gymnastics.

6. Must be able to accommodate a flexible work schedule to include days, weekends, holidays and night time (Nights, weekends, and holiday work is required particularly when special and strategic events are scheduled and/or during periods of staff shortages).


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


1. Knowledge of and experience in carrying out youth sports or other related recreation and sports programs through proper application of the applicable principles, concepts and techniques.

2. Prior experience/background knowledge in gymnastics, fitness, dance, cheerleading, or other sport activity is highly desired.

3. Exceptional customer focused skills to include ability to address participants' needs and resolve issues with tact and diplomacy; interpersonal skills to listen to and show concerns and respect for participants.

4. Must pass a pre-employment physical and annual physicals thereafter, provide evidence of immunization and be free from communicable disease.  


This position is designated as a Position of Trust, and the incumbent must be eligible for a background check.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries and State Criminal History Repository Check (Tier 1) with Childcare background checks which are required for positions that involve working with children under 18 years of age.
