Duties
- Conduct mineral assessments of public lands, classifying mineral potential of known occurrences.
- Evaluate mineral resource deposits and characteristics based on their geologic occurrence, areal distribution, stratigraphic relationships, geologic structure and comparison with correlative or analogous geologic units.
- Interpret planning documents and NEPA laws, regulations, policies, and guidance for specific land and resource management programs or projects.
- Prepare technical reports to explain the geologic and mineralogical character of solid minerals and support recommendations.
- Perform mineral examinations, write reports for the field office, including validity examinations, patent examinations, surface use determinations and occupancy trespass.

For GS-09: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Review and provide geologic support in the processing of applications to extract locatable or salable minerals; review mineral exploration proposals & recommend stipulations to protect resource values; provide geologic data to staff engaged in proposed NEPA projects. -OR-
Education: Have completed 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master`s degree or master`s or equivalent graduate degree in the field of geology or directly related fields of study. I will provide a copy of my college transcript - OR-
Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualification requirements for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
For GS-11: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Review and provide geologic expertise and process applications for extraction of locatable or salable minerals; coordinate and lead processing of mineral exploration proposals, including plans of operations and requiring stipulations to protect resource values; provide geologic expertise for proposed NEPA projects and lead NEPA projects related to the mineral materials program. -OR-
Education: Have completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the field of geology or directly related fields of study. I will provide a copy of my college transcript - OR-
Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualification requirements for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands: Field work may require the use of proper personal protective gear, working in dusty, hot, humid, and extreme cold environments, occasional off-road driving of 4-wheel drive vehicles, traveling to remote field sites in helicopters or small fixed wing planes, and/or boats. Lifting of equipment and objects weighing up to 20 kilograms may be necessary.
Work Environment: Field work may involve encounters with dangerous fauna and flora, and other wilderness dangers.
Education
This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you complete:
A. Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. or
- Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Public Planning: Knowledge of functions, principles, practices, and techniques of public planning, including those related to community planning, outdoor recreation planning, and natural resource management, such as demand forecasting, environmental impact analysis, financial forecasting, and land use planning and zoning.
Technical Competence: Knowledge of how to perform one's job. Refers to specialized knowledge that is acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience.
