Duties

  • Provides support in the areas of operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of the large and complex systems utilized for air conditioning and heating various historic/non-historic buildings.
  • Responsible for the operation/installation/repair/maintenance of various HVAC systems with a variety of components including but are not limited to natural gas boilers/steam heat exchangers/reheat coils/air volume diffusers.
  • Heating systems include forced air gas, forced air hot water, forced air direct expansion, electric radiator, hot water radiator, and geothermal; cooling systems include forced air chill water, forced air direct expansion, and geothermal.
  • Performs basic electrical work changing wires/run conduits/check circuits for code; uses a variety of test equipment/test lamps/voltage testers/ammeters/polarity testers to locate and identify broken, worn and damaged items.
  • Operates various electric resistance welding machines, such as arc and oxyacetylene welders and maintains equipment and facilities, i.e., gate hinges, latches, traps, chutes, wires, railings, loose pipes, corrals, throughs, and pens.
  • Operates motor vehicles including 4X4 pickups/tractors/truck trailers up to 10,000 pounds, to transport equipment/materials/supplies/small equipment to maintenance tasks such as repairing broken water or sewage septic lines.

  • This is a Drug Testing Designated Position. You will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use and pass prior to appointment. This position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • An applicant appointed to this position must possess (or obtain within 30 days of entrance on duty) and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position.
  • May require a one-year probationary period.

OPM Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining your qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that you possess the skill level that has equipped you with the particular job elements to successfully perform the duties of Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision.

Physical Demands: Field operations are a large component of this position. The physical ability to carry moderate loads, hike over rough terrain, climb steep slopes, drive a 1-ton 4X4 truck pulling a trailer, operate equipment, and use power and hand tools. The work requires walking, stooping, crawling, bending, lying flat and repeated lifting. The incumbent must have good vision, reaction reflexes and depth perception. Physical demands require coordination for hand, eye, and body. The incumbent is subjected to significant vibration when operating some pieces of equipment. The incumbent must exert physical effort related to actions such as lifting and carrying heavy loads (up to 40 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying objects of various weights, sizes, and shapes. Heavier items may occasionally be lifted with the assistance of lifting devises or other workers. Works on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and rooftops, and in cramped and hard-to-reach places. Duties require the employee to work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent is responsible for keeping all tools used in a clean, safe, working order. Incumbent calls to the attention of the supervisor, unsafe equipment or working conditions. Works in a safe manner, particularly when working from heights or in deep sub-ground locations that require the use of scaffolding and ladders of varying heights.

Work Environment: Work is performed in all kinds of environments from an office setting to project sites in rough and steep terrain. Field work involves vehicular and foot access and may involve accessing remote areas. Temperatures many range from below zero to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Weather may include periods of rain, snow, and heavy winds. The incumbent is expected to use and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and devices such as earplugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, steel-toed boots, flash shield and eye goggles worn to minimize risks while working with noisy equipment, using power and hand tools, when using chemicals and paints in cleaning and other maintenance and construction activities. There is
exposure to dirt, dust, sawdust, grease, fumes, smoke, noise, vibration, mud, and ice. Clothing and skin will become dirty, muddy, and greasy.

Welding involves exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiations, heat, flying sparks and the possibility of eye injury and burns. The incumbent will wear proper protective clothing and devices such as earplugs, welding helmet, gloves, flash shield and eye goggles and steel toed boots. Welding also includes work in awkward or cramped positions to get to hard-to-reach places. May be required to work irregular work schedules, weekends, and holidays. The incumbent is subject to continued safety training and is required to follow established safety and environmental health procedures and practices.

Education

This position falls under the Job Element standards for the WG-4700 - Transportation/Mobile Equipment Operation Family occupational series.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade positions.
