Duties
1. He/she is engaged in administrative nursing practice characterized by both increased complexity of clinical decision making and enhanced skill in nursing management.
2. Assign work to subordinates based on priorities and prepare schedules for completion of work
3. He/she provides leadership in day-to-day operations and input into the strategic planning process for the attainment of organizational goals.
4. The Nurse Manager keeps staff informed of the Medical Center Administrative goals through facilitating both vertical and horizontal communication in a timely manner.
5. The incumbent provides timely information regarding emergencies, unusual occurrences or issues that impact on nursing practice or operations to the Nurse Executive/Associate Director Patient Nursing Services (ADPNS).
6. He/she provides direct supervision of nursing personnel in their defined area of responsibility and evaluates their performance and competency.

8. The incumbent is knowledgeable concerning the disciplinary process and keeps his/her supervisor abreast of such actions. The Nurse Manager is responsible for all disciplinary actions and follow up actions required.
9. The Nurse Manager is responsible for all issues that affect nursing including standards of practice, credentialing, training, functional statement, position descriptions, proficiency reports, performance appraisals, policies, procedures, protocols and competencies.
10. He/she ensures appropriate orientation, education and continuing professional development of nursing personnel supervised.
11. The Nurse Manager assumes responsibility for staffing and scheduling of permanent and supplemental nursing staff, and ensures that assignments of the staff reflect their appropriate utilization, compliance with staffing guidelines, and The Joint Commission standards.
12. The Nurse Manager is fiscally responsible, and participates with the ACNS & ADPNS in planning and monitoring the budget for his/her area of responsibility. He/she allocates available resources to promote efficient, effective, and customer focused nursing care.
13. The incumbent serves as a role model and coaches and supports staff in critical thinking regarding professional nursing practice. He/she fosters an atmosphere conducive to educational experiences for nursing and other students.
14. The Nurse Manager facilitates an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration and collegial relationships. He/she promotes peer review.
15. The Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring an environment that is conducive to the recruitment and retention of highly competent nursing staff with diverse backgrounds.
16. He/she directs practice according to established policies, standards of care, and standards of practice, and is responsible to ensure that nursing practice and operations are compliant with all applicable local, VISN, or National Standards, policies, Statutes and regulations.
17. He/she ensures that nursing practice is consistent with external standards such as The Joint Commission and internal standards such as the VA Performance Measures.
18. The Nurse Manager is an active member of the Clinical Management Team. He/she plays a key role in the ongoing systematic evaluation and improvement of the quality and effectiveness of nursing care and services as they affect patient outcomes.
19. The Nurse Manager works closely with the Associate Chief Nurse, Acute Care (ACN/AC) and Associate Chief Nurse of outpatient services. The incumbent provides guidance and direction to the performance improvement process and quality metrics.
20. The Nurse Manager works closely with peers and in the absence of Nurse Managers will be able to assist in the collaborative coverage of other units and departments.
21. The Nurse Manager works closely with their Assistant Nurse Manager mentoring and ensuring in the absence of the Nurse Manager that the Assistant Nurse Manager will be designated to handle administrative and clinical issues such as staffing coverage, granting leave, and/or staff issues, unless otherwise designated.
