THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION.
This National Guard position is for a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER (TITLE 32), Position Description Number D1287000 and is part of the IL FMS 2, National Guard.

Duties
As a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER (TITLE 32), WL-5801-10, you will serve as a working leader of three or more Surface Maintenance Mechanics.
Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list:
- Assign work orders to specific crewmembers and select workers for various jobs on the basis of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Pass on to workers instructions received from the supervisor, demonstrate proper work methods, and starts work.
- Work along with other workers and set pace performing non-supervisory repair work of the same kind and level as that done by the group led.
- Insure that needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
- Remove and disassemble engines and major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems.
- Make the appropriate repairs, overhaul, or modifications in accordance with the proper repair specifications and procedures.
- Make adjustments and repair to electrical and suspension systems.
- Independently perform repairs and maintenance functions with little or no supervision in remote locations that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts of components and systems such as injectors, leaking wheel cylinders, corroded mufflers, fuel tanks, brake cylinders and worn brake shoes, voltage regulators, generators, injector pumps, and fuel pumps.
- Utilize embedded diagnostics in equipment and a wide variety of original equipment manufacturer system analyzers in order to determine the exact nature or extent of repair.
- Make repairs to assemblies and components such as voltage regulators, generators/alternators, brake cylinders, etc.
- Conduct readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment supported by the activity.
- Perform operational inspections and ensure vehicles and equipment are properly serviced, including brake adjustments, replacing hydraulic fluids, greasing, cleaning, etc., and performs other preventive maintenance operations as required.
- Troubleshoot, perform maintenance and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles.
- Troubleshoot equipment and diagnose the cause of mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks and/or uses test equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, pressure gauges, and computer diagnostic tools.
- Answer workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.
- Interpret work instructions and assist lower graded repairers or trainees in the more difficult and complex tasks.
Conditions of Employment
- This is an excepted service position that requires membership in the Illinois National Guard and in the military grade listed in the announcement. - Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.

Qualifications
AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of considerations for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code § 709), will be in the following manner and sequence, The ONLY area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG.
Military Grades: Enlisted/Warrant Officer - May not exceed Rank of CW2
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: MUSTpossess experience or training that has provided sufficient knowledge to complete the work of this occupational series; experience or training which demonstrates the ability to lead other technicians engaged in the duties performed by this occupational series.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WL-10 Level MUST possess experience or training diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying more complex vehicles, equipment, and more complicated systems; experience which has provided a thorough knowledge of diagnostic equipment; experience applying independent judgment in determining methods and techniques required to solve unusually complex maintenance and repair problems; experience in testing, inspecting, and evaluating the work performed on vehicles, equipment and systems; in addition to the journeyman level knowledge, experience which demonstrates the ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of others in fields directly related the repair function of this occupational series; must have the ability to perform administrative functions; to read and interpret a variety of technical publications used in the repair of supported equipment; ability to provide guidance to others in work related directly to this occupational series.
