The primary purpose of this position is to play, lay out, fabricate, modify, repair, assemble, and install sheet metal parts, items, and assemblies and to perform welding work.

Duties

  • Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders in the construction and maintenance of installation facilities.
  • Develops patterns, cuts, forms, joins, assembles, and installs items and systems which have combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves, angles, and planes.
  • Welds commonly used metals in connection with the construction and restoration of sheet metal products.
  • Performs sheet metal mechanic duties in a safe manner, utilizing safety practices and procedures, and complying with established safety rules and regulations.
  • Operates and maintains complex hand and power tools and equipment such as sliproll forming machines, box and pan brakes, rotary machines with extra forming rolls, and crimping, burring, turning, and beading machines, and soldering and welding equipment to fabricate and repair items.

  • The work will require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license will be required for the position.
  • Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items in handling larger and bulkier material. Weight lifted seldom exceeds 50 lbs.
  • Requires physical effort which includes prolonged standing on production lines; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolds; working in cramped and awkward positions, and reaching, lifting, and bending in uncomfortable positions for extended periods.
  • Works both inside and outside and is subject to a moderate amount of noise and vibration from shop machines. When working outside is subject to a variety of weather conditions.
  • Subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and burns. Shop areas normally have adequate lighting and ventilation. Required to wear safety glassed when performing eye hazardous operations.
  • May be required to train and/or guide lower graded employees.
  • May be required to be certified for working with and/operating scissors or aerial boom lift.
  • Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3800 Metal Work family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  • Knowledge of equipment, structure, materials, etc. (includes constructing repair, and forging).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
  • Layout and pattern development (includes geometric projection and triangulation).
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, etc., for metal work
  • Dexterity (assembly, disassembly, reassembly, etc.)
Our ideal candidate is someone with integrity who takes pride in their work, also is a TEAM player, works great with other members! Is proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical specifications. Strong knowledge of sheet metal fabrication techniques, including cutting, shaping, bending, and joining. Skilled in using a variety of hand and power tools, such as shears, brakes, punches, welding equipment, and measuring tools. Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy and precision in measuring, marking, and cutting sheet metal. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment. Good physical stamina and strength to stand, bend, lift, and carry heavy and bulky sheet metal products and equipment. Excellent time management and organizational skills to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines. Knowledge of safety procedures and guidelines for working with sheet metal, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).


PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
