Summary

About the Position: This position is located at Naval Hospital Beaufort in Beaufort, South Carolina. This position is a part of the Defense Health Agency.

Hours of work are 0700-1530 Monday - Friday with occasional overtime. Working environment may be inside, outside, in confined spaces, on roofs, in mechanical rooms, sometimes dirty, sometimes hot or cold, on ladders or scaffolding.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation using Direct Hire Authority for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce

Duties

  • Troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and overhaul a variety of large air conditioning systems that provide heating, cooling, dehumidifying, and controls for humidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulation.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair ventilation equipment, including air handling units, fan coil units, exhaust fans, circulating fans, and fresh air fans.
  • Move units to new locations for improved ventilation.
  • Personally perform light machinist work, such as making bearings, shafts, and valve parts, fan brackets, motor bases, etc.
  • Diagnose and repair problems such as leaks in lines, dirty or worn points, faulty valves, etc.
  • Test and adjust pressure for efficient operation and correct temperatures.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Universal EPA Refrigerant certification.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license and any installation or DOD operator's permit requirement for the type of equipment operated.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment and annual physical examination.
  • The employee may be required to work extended shifts/after duty hours as directed by severity of the emergency or by the direction of higher management for the purpose of maintaining command and control of crisis situation or mission requirements.
  • Work is subject rotating shifts and /or irregular tour of duty to include weekends, nights and/or holidays.
  • Universal CFC certification is required. In accordance with section 608 CAA 1990, incumbent must be certified as a universal technician as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. I have the ability to perform the full range of air conditioning and refrigeration maintenance. I am skilled in installing, maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting, mechanical pneumatic and hydraulic precision equipment and control devices. I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection.

License/Certification required: EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Recovery license/certification required at entry or within six months of employment.
  • Physical Efforts: Work involves strenuous, heavy physical effort in constantly reaching, bending, and turning. Equipment work on is large and must be moved in and out of specific locations. Frequently sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 75 pounds and occasionally heavier. Weight handling equipment is available when handling large units. Ladders, scaffolds, and platforms may be used when working on large systems or roofs.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed outside, in all types of weather. Subject to sudden temperature changes and extreme cold during repair of large walk-in refrigerators and in mechanical rooms having extreme temperatures. Exposed to possibility of broken bones from falls from ladders and scaffolds. Exposed to possibility of injury from electrical current. Exposed to cleaning chemicals. Protective devices such as but not limited to earplugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, hard hat, and safety shoes are required. Long trousers or coveralls and shirt or tee shirt with sleeves are worn.
