Job Description (Please follow all instructions carefully)

Summary

About the Position: Serves as an Animal Health Technician (Equine) with responsibility for care and support of Veterinary Services equine mission with 3rd United States Infantry Regiment.

This position is a TERM Not to Exceed 3 years position. It is time-limited and may be extended up to a maximum of eight years. May be made permanent without further competition (see additional information).

Duties

  • Perform and record monthly stable inspections; estimate weights of working equines and administer preventive medical products, to include vaccinations and other supplements.
  • Coordinate with and aid Animal Care Specialists with monthly and quarterly veterinary specific training.
  • Analyze and evaluate environmental sanitation programs for the herd, quarantines, when necessary, conditions, isolates, vaccinates and assists in implementing preventive medicine procedures.
  • Assist veterinarian with examinations, emergencies, and routine procedures.
  • Perform and assist various patient exams for working equines to include, but not limited to, joint injections, lameness exams, pre-purchase examinations, diagnostic imaging, colic workups, laceration and wound repairs, etc.
  • Administer preanesthetic and IV anesthetic induction agents as directed by veterinarian.
  • Oversee the 3rd United States Infantry Regiment 68T personnel, the treatment room and medical logistics for the equine mission.
  • Ensure the organization's strategic plan, mission, vision, and values are communicated, and integrated into the strategies, goals, objectives, work plans, and work products and services.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Pre-employment and annual physicals while in the position.
  • Must possess and/or be able to obtain and maintain a valid State-issued driver's license. Must obtain and maintain a valid Government driver's license in order to operate Government vehicles to drive to various sites.
  • May be required to work other than normal duty hours which may include weekends, holidays, and/or on-call duty hours.
  • Use of protective clothing, safety devices and equipment required.
  • Position may require employee to work under adverse environmental conditions.
  • Position has been identified as Key and Mission Essential (See 'Additional Information' section for more details).
  • This is a drug testing position - must pass urinalysis testing as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter. Must sign DA Form 5019-R.
  • Temporary Duty (TDY) travel is required up to 10% of the time for travel to other locations for training, mission support, prepurchase exams, and other activities for readiness.
  • Term employment is subject to a one-year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eduction and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience:
One year of specialized experience which includes1) Provide medical care to large animals such as horses. 2) Assist veterinarian with medical examinations such as pre-purchase examinations. 3) Assist with dispensing medication to large animals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Zoology, Biology, Chemistry, or Agricultural subjects. OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Selective Placement Factor: You must possess a current, valid license as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, Certified Veterinary Technician, Registered Veterinary Technician or Equivalent Licensure in a state, the District of Columbia, or a territory of the United States.
