Summary

This position is located in the Office of the Auditor-Master (OAM) of the District of Columbia Superior Court. The Attorney Advisor is responsible for conducting investigations, preparing accounts and reports, analyzing and recommending resolutions of cases referred to the Auditor-Master by Orders of Reference, pursuant to D.C. Superior Court Rules, from the Family Court and Probate, Tax and Civil Divisions of the Court.

Duties

Brief Description of Duties:

  • Plans and executes report and account preparation; sets up meetings where necessary, issues correspondence, resolves problems and conflicts in consultation with the Auditor-Master and Deputy Auditor-Master.  
  • Prepares case for initial status, review, and full evidentiary hearings by thoroughly reviewing case files and identifying legal and factual issues. 
  • Confirms attendance of parties and counsel in coordination with administrative assistant and ensures proper case calendaring.  
  • Conducts briefings with the Auditor-Master or Deputy Auditor-Master before hearings with summaries of factual disputes, financial concerns, and legal questions. 
  • Participates in hearings, manages the WebEx recording interface, and coordinates document access via Box.com and email for involved parties. 
  • Drafts and balances accounts with minimal need for adjustments, ensuring accuracy in all account entries. Determines accounting periods and validates assets, income, and expenditure using bank statements, investment reports, and supporting financial documentation.
  • Prepares drafts, edits, and finalizes reports of the Auditor-Master and Deputy Auditor-Master for review by the Court. 
  • Provides legal memoranda or guidance related to applicable court rules, including but not limited to: Domestic Relations 53, Civil Rule 53 and emerging legal questions. 
  • Coordinates intern recruitment and placement. 
  • Acts as a liaison between the Office of the Auditor-Master, judicial staff, counsel, parties, witnesses, and other Superior Court divisions.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

A Juris Doctor from an accredited law school, with a minimum of five (5) years of practice, plus three (3) years of experience devoted to the practice of Probate and the representation of fiduciaries and the preparation of fiduciary accounts, or the representation of, or employment by, other entities involving accounting matters. 

Must be an active member in good standing with the bar of the District of Columbia. Documentation to support proof of bar membership must be submitted with your application. 

Please note that authorization for the release of your adult criminal record revealing any convictions and forfeitures, and any criminal cases currently pending before the Courts is required.  If you are selected for the position, a criminal history records check will be conducted.

The District of Columbia Courts is an independent branch of the District of Columbia Government and is not under the authority of the City Mayor or the D. C. Council. DC Courts' appropriation comes directly from Congress. All DC Courts non-judicial employees receive federal benefits for the following programs:  Life Insurance, Retirement Benefits, Health Insurance and Workers Compensation.

The DC Courts leave policy is as follows:

Annual Leave:  New full-time employees earn four (4) hours of annual leave biweekly. After three years of service this increases to six (6) hours biweekly, and at 15 years it increases to (8) hours biweekly. Most military, federal and District of Columbia government service counts toward the time required to go into the next higher annual leave category. Employees can carry over no more than 240 hours of annual leave into the next leave year.

Sick Leave is used for personal medical needs, care of a family member, or adoption related purposes. Full-time employees earn 4) hours of sick leave biweekly. This leave can be accrued without limit.

In addition to the federal health plans, the DC Courts offer employees supplemental vision and dental plans as well as a commuter transit benefit subsidy, for a maximum of $150 a month. There are 26 pay periods in the year.
