Summary

This position is located in the District of Columbia Courts, Capital Projects and Facilities Management Division. Under general supervision, the employee performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work at the full-performance level in the mechanical or building trades in connection with the maintenance and repair of the Courts’ facilities, institutions, and buildings. Building Maintenance Engineers repair and maintain commercial and industrial buildings.

Duties

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  • Operates low-pressure steam boilers, hot-water boilers, and central air conditioning equipment.
  • Inspects and adjusts all components of the HVAC systems.
  • Maintains daily log sheets, which requires the recording of various aspects of equipment operation.
  • Monitors and balances interior flow and temperature, as required by the change in outside temperature and humidity.
  • Inspects building equipment, air handling units, boilers, steam stations, compressors, cooling towers to ensure the proper operation.
  • Collects and transports hazardous waste materials including batteries and fluorescent tubes.
  • Requisitions building maintenance supplies, material and equipment; assists in monitoring inventory; loads and unloads supplies, as necessary.
  • Performs duties relative to the enterprise’s roof maintenance program; inspects condition of roofs; clean roof gutters and drains.
  • Tests refrigerant systems for excessive air, leaks, and excessive load conditions and notifies supervisor of findings to enable corrective actions.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR GRADE 8: High school diploma or GED certificate plus four (4) years of experience in basic (general) maintenance techniques in a variety of trades such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems for a building or building complex.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR GRADE 9: High school diploma or GED certificate plus five (5) years of experience in intermediate maintenance techniques in a variety of trades such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems for a building or building complex. Must have and maintain a District of Columbia Class 8A Refrigeration license or a District of Columbia Class 6 Steam & Hot Water Boiler License. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour safety training is required. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR GRADE 11: High school diploma or GED certificate plus seven (7) years of experience in advanced maintenance techniques in a variety of trades such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems for a building or building complex. Must have and maintain a District of Columbia Class 3 Steam Engineer license or be certified with the designation of a Master’s certificate (plumbing, electrical or HVAC). Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour safety training is required.

The incumbent must be licensed to operate a DC Courts' vehicle, and must be able to participate in a rotating, on-call duties, scheduled overtime and emergency support as needed.

The DC Courts leave policy is as follows:

Annual Leave:  New full-time employees earn four (4) hours of annual leave biweekly. After three years of service this increases to six (6)hours biweekly, and at 15 years it increases to eight(8)hours biweekly. Most military, federal and District of Columbia government service counts toward the time required to go into the next higher annual leave category. Employees can carry over no more than 240 hours of annual leave into the next leave year.

Sick Leave is used for personal medical needs, care of a family member, or adoption related purposes. Full-time employees earn four(4)hours of sick leave biweekly. This leave can be accrued without limit.

In addition to the federal health plans, the DC Courts offer employees supplemental vision and dental plans as well as a commuter transit benefit subsidy, for a maximum of $150 a month. There are 26 pay periods in the year.
