Duties
This position serves as the Disaster Preparedness Specialist responsible for overall disaster planning and emergency management functions for the Smithsonian Institution and its management.
In this position, you will:
- Provide leadership, strategic policy and direction, advocacy, coordination, integration and analysis of the Smithsonian-wide emergency management and disaster recovery plans. Develop and implement Smithsonian-wide policies and guidelines for emergency management planning and business continuity to effectively provide for organized decisions and actions to minimize losses and ensure essential functions are sustained.
- Serve as the Smithsonian expert on advanced principles and practices and possesses expert knowledge of planning, developing and implementing policies and guidelines for emergency management and business continuity plans.
- Write reports, evaluations and operating procedures (circulated at high management levels) that address complex technical and procedural issues.
- Manage staff specifically assigned to emergency preparedness.
- Perform studies and analyses to identify problems, solutions and trends related to emergency management and continuity of operations.

Qualifications
Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as activities which involve management and organizational principles and practices with experience of planning, programming, and human capital functions in managing, supervising, and motivating a diverse staff of professional, technical, and support personnel; setting priorities, establishing schedules, and interfacing effectively with all levels of management.

- Ability to provide executive direction, implement programs and projects, advocate for emergency management, and develop policies, guidelines and manage all three phases of emergency management: before, during and after.
- Ability to apply and communicate knowledge of emergency management and continuity of operations.
- Skill in written communication in order to write reports, evaluations, operating procedures, and provide clear, concise responses to a variety of written inquiries.
- Skill in managing, supervising and motivating a diverse staff of professional, technical and support personnel while communicating orally and in writing with all levels of management.
- Ability to perform analyses, discover problem areas, and identify and implement solutions.
