Summary

This is a public notice flyer to notify interested applicants of anticipated vacancies. Applications will NOT be accepted through this flyer. Duties

  • The duties of the position at the GS-09 full performance level will include:
  • Perform operating project and special water resource investigations for hydraulic engineers, Planning Division engineers and Regulatory functions personnel.
  • Monitor hydrologic data, both in person and remotely.
  • Assemble data collection systems and installs components within data collection equipment.
  • Obtains water levels and takes discharge measurements at gaging stations and at numerous ungagged sites during high and low flow periods.
  • Develop historical data and to assist engineers in the planning design construction and operation of a wide range of navigation, flood control.
  • Perform maintenance on all Mobile District stream gauging equipment.
  • Perform inspections of stream and coastal gaging stations and takes discharge measurements throughout river basin area, collecting recorded data.
  • Coordinate maintenance of cooperative stream gage sites with representatives of cooperating agencies.
  • Assist in preparing budgets and arranges for purchases of supplies necessary for operation of the stream gaging program.
  • Analyzes the field data to establish a discharge rating (stage-discharge relationship) for each station in assigned region.
  • Develop data to establish stage- discharge relationships for fixed crest spillways, gated spillways, weirs, sluice gates, or other structures.
  • Performs office computations to develop annual hydrologic data reports, annual station analysis and description of station's operation.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a current State Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Incumbent must be able to operate a boat and posses or be able to obtain a USACE or equivalent Boat Operators License.
  • Minimum overnight travel requirements up to 40% may be required.
  • This position requires work that is physically demanding and includes walking, bending, climbing steps (sometimes carrying up to 60 pounds), lifting of equipment up to 100 pounds.
  • This position requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activity.
  • The work area may include exposure to environments such as: an outdoor environment involving moderate exposure to rain, cold/hot weather, and icy streams and rivers that may require special safety precautions and gear.

Specialized Experience for the GS-1316-05: 1) Work as a technician or aid in engineering, earth, physical, or natural science, forestry, soil conservation, or surveying; trades or crafts work in maintenance or construction of facilities or equipment related to hydrology; drafting; AND/OR 2) construction estimating if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Successful completion of a full four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with (a) major study in an appropriate field of science, engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, industrial technology, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, biology, or mathematics

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience for the GS-1316-06: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting with a variety of duties involving installation, reading, and maintenance of all gauges assigned to area. 2) Assisting with hydrologic investigations relating to various navigation, hydropower and flood projects. 3) Assisting with the installation of electronic hydrologic equipment and performs tests of instruments and equipment for accuracy of data being collected. AND/OR 4) Assisting with performing minor maintenance and repairs on equipment to insure collection of acceptable data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as engineering, industrial technology, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, biology, or mathematics.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience for the GS-1316-07: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1.) Assist with the installation and maintenance of hydrologic equipment to improve or augment existing instrumentation; 2) Assist in performing routine maintenance, repairs, and adjustments to hydrologic instruments and gauges; 3) Maintain inventory controls and audit trails to precent loss, waste, fraud and abuse of resources. 4) monitor hydrologic data collection systems to ensure performance and identify deficiency; AND/OR 5.) Creates and maintains relationships with local, federal and state agencies to exchange rainfall data and coordinate stream gaging. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as engineering, industrial technology, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, biology, or mathematics.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience for the GS-1316-08: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1.)
