In this position you will provide highly specialized ground, on-console, and/or flight instruction to experienced space operators, engineers, operational pilots, combat systems officers (rated navigators, electronic warfare officers, and weapon system operators)...   • ...and/or RPA pilots in order to educate them on the theories, procedures, and techniques necessary to test and evaluate research, prototype, and production atmospheric and/or exo-atmospheric vehicles and their systems. Responsible for the academic content and rigor of all assigned courses as well as curriculum development in support of a 48-week Master's Degree program.
  • Instructs students on a variety of space and/or flight test and supporting topics throughout the curriculum, with the primary emphasis in Astronautical Sciences.
  • Performs active role in curriculum development.
  • Works with the Astronautical Science Technical Expert and appropriate Branch personnel to determine instructors (in-house or guest) for each specific course in Astronautical Sciences.
  • This position may require crew/instructor duties in support of space operations, and/or may require flying in government, military, and contracted aircraft.

  • Required: 5 years of test experience OR an advanced engineering degree
  • Required: 2 years of space-related engineering, operations, and/or acquisition experience
  • Required: at least a MS in Astronautical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering, or close equivalents, and/or be a graduate of a military test pilot school...

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Professional and Scientific Positions.

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR 0801:

A. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must:(1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

B. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower broadband NH-02, equivalent to the next lower grade GS-11 or equivalent in other pay systems. Specialized experience is the ability to provide highly specialized ground, on-console, and/or flight instruction to experienced space operators, engineers, operational pilots, combat systems officers (rated navigators, electronic warfare officers, and weapon system operators), and/or RPA pilots in order to educate them on the theories, procedures, and techniques necessary to test and evaluate research, prototype, and production atmospheric and/or exo-atmospheric vehicles and their systems. Responsible for the academic content and rigor of all assigned courses as well as curriculum development in support of a 48-week Master's Degree program.
Desired Skills:
  • 5 years of space or flight test experience highly desired
  • 5 years of Department of the Air Force space-related experience desired
  • Graduate of one, or more, 319th Combat Training Squadron, NSSI, or other similar space studies courses desired
  • Prior teaching experience desired
  • Coding experience desired
  • PhD in Aeronautical Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering is highly desired
NOTE: Due to the use of 120-day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  1. ???????
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of regulations, policies, guidelines, and procedures relating to USAF TPS and space/flight test operations at Edwards AFB and/or the National Space Test and Training Complex.
  3. Knowledge of advanced concepts, theories, principles, practices, methods, and techniques of space test and/or flight test, including practical application of aerospace and/or electrical engineering theory, sufficient to analyze, evaluate, explain and demonstrate to others ground, space and/or flight test theory and techniques on experimental, developmental, or operational aerospace systems.
  4. Knowledge of laboratory, ground, and air vehicle, and/or space system test conduct including modeling & simulation, test & safety planning, risk mitigation, test technique determination, data analysis, report writing, and presentation methods.
  5. Skill at developing academic lesson plans and teaching in a classroom environment.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
