Summary

The( Reusable Medical Device) RMD Coordinator provides oversight in the development, implementation, coordination, maintenance, and evaluation of critical and semi-critical medical devices within the RMD program. The RMD Coordinator is responsible for developing (Standard Operating Procedures) SOP and competencies for all RMD for(Sterile Processing Service) SPS, in compliance with accreditation organizations and VHA-specific requirements as well as medical center policies and procedures for SPS.

Duties

Duties included but are not limited to:
The RMD Coordinator will write SOPs/Competencies and track current SOPs/Competencies to ensure timely updates based of policy and IFU changes. The incumbent will write competencies for employees. Controls the release of any new equipment until verification of all SOPs/Competencies have been developed and communicated to staff. SOP's and competencies will be written to follow manufacturer's instructions for use (MIFU). This includes coordination across services and/or disciplines which can influence the organizational mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities for RMD. Monitors, analyzes, and provides consultation on infection control issues regarding RMD. Participates in rounds to assist in the verification of each service's SOPs/Competencies for RMD. Investigates the need for any manufacturer and model-specific SOP/Competency required for new RMD at the time of the acquisition request. When new SOPs are required, obtains the necessary information from the manufacturer or vendor. Develops SOPs to standardize equipment used in the medical center. Educates hospital staff on all new equipment to ensure compliance is met as it relates to RMD. The incumbent will perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Controls:
The employee is under the supervision of the Assistant Chief, Sterile Processing Services, or designee(s).
- The supervisor and/or Service Chief will assign work with standing instructions on objectives, priorities, and deadlines, and provides guidance for unusually involved situations.
- The employee will work as team member with other Medical Supply Technicians of various experience to carry out the daily work utilizing the written standard operating procedures and/or manufactures written instructions in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted/standard practices.
- The supervisor evaluates completed work for overall technical soundness and conformance to agency policies through competency assessment utilizing simulation, direct observation, and verbal responses from the incumbent.
Customer Services Requirements:
Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
Occasional Travel:
This position may offer occasional travel away from the duty station to assist with Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) support during periods of required coverage. In addition, this position may be selected to attend VHA sponsored educational training or certification courses. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Driver License to operate a government vehicle.
Patient Safety Competency Statement:
The incumbent will be responsible for promoting a culture of safety and will fully cooperate in efforts to improve patient safety and eradicate potential events including the reporting of events resulting in actual or potential injury to a patient. Incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of the reporting procedures involving safety issues relating to patients.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience and/or Education
  • Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
  • Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
  • Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
  • Certification. None.
  • English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.

GS-08 Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)
(a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Ability to read and interpret written procedures and select appropriate action in order to instruct staff in correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
2. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to ensure staff compliance with written directives, rules and regulations.
3. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
4. Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures.
5. Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.


Preferred Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
