Summary

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is unique in the size and the scope of its work. It serves as both the local and the federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. On the local side, AUSAs assigned to the Superior Court Division prosecute cases ranging from misdemeanors to homicides. On the federal side, AUSAs assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute federal crimes. The Civil Division further defends the United States in civil suits brought in the District of Columbia.

Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for performing discovery assignments in civil cases, especially those provisions and amendments addressing electronic discovery (e-Discovery) and utilizing automated litigation software applications and other resources to organize, review, analyze and compile information for use by attorney's in the litigation of a variety of civil cases in the Civil Division, United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia.

Typical work assignments will include:

  • Providing technical assistance to attorney's in facilitating the management of incoming and outgoing document discovery in accordance with electronic discovery and other procedural requirements.
  • Working with the Information Technology team to analyze automated litigation support functions and monitor system use and response time and utilizing a variety of Automated Litigation Support (ALS) software applications to locate, organize, analyze, characterize and present information that is pertinent to the government's position in cases.
  • Assisting attorney's in trial preparation by organizing and processing voluminous case information for retrieval through automated means such as scanning, indexing and organizing documents in a database.
  • Assisting attorney's in developing clear and effective presentations for use in legal proceedings.
  • Assists the Litigation Hold Coordinator in preparing and issuing litigation hold notices.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications

To be qualified for the GS-09 Legal Administrative Specialist, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service; or a master's or equivalent graduate degree; OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D., if related; or a combination of specialized experience and education.

Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as having a practical knowledge of law, the litigation and judicial process, and applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures and is demonstrated by performing a variety of analytical legal work; assisting attorneys and legal support personnel with court rules, regulations and procedures; analyzing and evaluating legal decisions and case files to identify relevant issues and potential evidence; conducting legal research; recommending automated support methods for trials, customizing databases and programs for user needs; using automated resources and technology for the development, presentation, and litigation of federal cases (i.e., document management software, digital imaging applications, optical character recognition tools, graphic design software, audio visual equipment, and trial presentation programs); assisting with trial preparation and presentations; preparing motions, orders, pleadings, subpoenas and legal briefs, and pre-trial documents; knowledge of legal terminology.

Education: One of the following types of education in a related field: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university.
OR
Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year.

Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
