Skill and Knowledge
Ability to handle a variety of tools and equipment required to perform duties in a safe and acceptable manner in compliance with unit safety regulations and work standards.
Skill in using basic tools common to automotive and heavy mobile equipment mechanics, such as wrenches, sockets, ratchets, impact wrenches, torque wrenches, pliers, brake tools and screwdrivers. Skill in using a test equipment, e.g., capacity testers to determine if batteries are discharging or need replacement, circuit testers, tachometers, dwell meters and battery hydrometers.
Knowledge of hazardous (e.g. lead paint and solvents) and universal (e.g. lamps and batteries) waste management requirements to ensure compliance with environmental regulations in performance of duties (e.g. decide hazardous material is no longer needed and will be disposed, select containers for waste accumulation, add waste to containers, label containers, move waste to and from waste accumulation sites, manage waste accumulation sites).
Must possess a valid state vehicle operator’s license to operate motor vehicles. Ability to follow safe operating procedures and prevent damage to equipment and vehicles during operation of the special purpose vehicles.
Responsibility
The incumbent is under the supervision of the Maintenance Worker Supervisor who makes assignments orally or in writing. Work is seldom checked while in progress and is reviewed through successful accomplishment of assigned tasks, customer satisfaction and conformance to safe work practices.
Physical Effort
Continual walking and standing is required. Physical effort is required to operate foot and hand controls while operating the levers and controls for the scrubber and sweeper vehicles. Lifts some items weighing up to 50 pounds, e.g., bags of water and oil absorbing compounds, buckets of curb sealer and floor soap and items up to 100 pounds, e.g., kegs of ice melting compounds.
Working Conditions
Works in areas that are cramped, dusty, greasy and wet. May work indoors and outdoors and in a wide range of temperatures.
