Duties
Performs a full range of masonry functions across the National Gallery of Art’s indoor and outdoor areas, including galleries, exhibition spaces, and public areas, utilizing both traditional stone masonry techniques and current technology. Maintaining, repairing, altering, and constructing masonry, stone, marble, brick, tile, granite, limestone, and related surfaces.
Selects appropriate materials and tools, plans the work, and determines the best methods to complete masonry repairs or construction. Specific tasks include laying brick, concrete block, limestone, tiles, cobblestones, marble, flagstone, cut stone, and other elements in constructing or repairing walkways, driveways, walls, and structural areas.
Skill in cutting through structural masonry to create openings for new doors, passageways, or fire exits, as well as matching new masonry with existing materials to ensure a seamless blend with the surrounding architecture.
Skill in working from blueprints, rough sketches, or oral instructions, and is responsible for planning and laying out the work details, such as computing the number of courses of brick and block and the corresponding mortar thickness to ensure even courses align with sills, windows, doors, and other openings.
In addition to regular masonry duties, this position supports exhibition-related functions by assisting in the handling, movement, and installation of large and delicate works of art, including sculptures, pedestals, and other decorative arts. This includes the disassembly and reassembly of sculptures and pedestals, as well as assisting with the unpacking and packing of heavy and fragile art objects.
Cleans and polishes marble, stone, and terrazzo floors, as well as other stone surfaces, using specialized cleaning agents to maintain the condition of landmark buildings.
Position requires operating a variety of equipment, including vehicles like trucks, JCBs, and forklifts to transport materials and objects.

Work requires frequent standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and stooping. Work occurs in cramped areas. Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds, unassisted. Must be able to work from scaffolding, lifts, and temporary platforms. Work occurs inside, outside or on the roof. Must be able to work with dirt, dust, grease, and solvents from cleaning solutions. The incumbent is required to wear protective clothing and safety equipment as necessary. The incumbent is exposed to eye, skin, nose and lung irritation from glue, bonding chemicals, and vapors.
