Duties

The CDC utilizes Direct/Expedited Hire Authorities to fill vacancies in a variety of occupations. This vacancy is a REPOSITORY of applications. Duties and responsibilities vary and may increase according to the grade level of the position. Applications may be periodically referred to hiring managers both during the open period and after the closing date. Because of the large number of applications anticipated, applicants' status will not be updated.

This public notice will be used to fill STEM positions listed below at the GS-11 through GS-15 grade levels.

  • Mathematician GS-1520

Major Duties Required for This Position May include:

  • Conducting research on basic mathematical principles, methods, procedures, techniques, or relationships

  • Developing mathematical methods to solve a variety of scientific, engineering, economic problems where precise specification of the relationships, rigor and economy of mathematical operations, and logical deduction are the controlling considerations.

  • Compiles detailed work plans showing milestones, and a backup of personnel and budgetary, needs when dealing with projects.

  • Prepare evaluation of test activities and adapt and apply existing mathematical methods and techniques in a specialized branch of mathematics to specific subject matter applications while recommending the most efficient means for conducting the research.

Due to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) process enhancement to use Shared Certificates throughout the Agency, some of the requirements below may differ:

  • One-year probationary period may be required.
  • This position may be subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Some positions will be filled as permanent or term appointments.
  • This position may be subject to the OGE Financial Disclosure requirements of the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 (P.L. 95-521).   • In accordance with Executive Order 12564 of September 15, 1986, The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is A Drug-Free Federal Workplace. This position may require a Drug Test and be subject to Random Drug Testing. The position may require the submission of a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and be subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing upon hiring. If required to submit to urinalysis, the appointment to the position will be contingent upon a negative test result.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Degree: mathematics; or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics OR
  • Combination of education & experience: courses equivalent to a major in mathematics (including at least 24 semester hours in mathematics), as above, plus appropriate experience or additional education
NOTE: Total course work must have included differential & integral calculus &, in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisiteIn addition to Basic Qualifications above, Minimum Qualifications must be met:
  • GS-11:
    • At least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR
    • 1 year of specialized experience (GS-9 equivalent) OR
    • A combination of education & experience
  • GS-12 & above:
    • At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level

Education

Additional information

The salary listed is Rest of U.S. (RUS). Locality pay will be adjusted to reflect location after selection. If selected, you will be required to sign a Workplace Flexibilities Agreement. Salary may be adjusted to include a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) of 1.69% for Anchorage, Alaska, 8.90% for Honolulu, Hawaii, and 2.63% for Puerto Rico.

This position is being filled through Direct Hire Authority for this occupation and is open to all US Citizens. Vacancies will be filled through OPM's Direct Hire Authority.
