Summary

This position is located at the John D. Dingell, VA medical center, Detroit, Michigan. The neurodiagnostic Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) performs diagnostic examinations ormedical treatment procedures as part of the diagnosis and treatment of Veterans. Electrodiagnostic technologist is expected to keep an accurate record of testing.. Equipment includes EEG and EMG machines as well as autonomic laboratory equipment.

Duties

Major Duties:

  • Administers EEG diagnostics to patients and is responsible for proper set up of the equipment, test administration and patient care during the testing procedure.
  • Performs a full range of EEG examinations including complex/advanced awake and sleep recordings; nerve conduction studies using electromyogphy equipment. Performs recordings for interpretation and performs a preliminary review and interpretation of the recordings.
  • Assists physicians performing nerve conduction studies, including patient preparation, and inputting of results.
  • Complies with all safety and emergency procedures in the administration of EEG diagnostics.
  • Insures that machines used in the testing procedures (both EEG and EMG) are maintained and working appropriately.
  • Schedules patients utilizing the scheduling software package for patients requiring EEG's.
  • Monitors patients during EEG diagnostics and assists physicians in the monitoring of patients having EMG diagnostics.
  • Documents patient results in EEG and EMG software packages and insures that results are also recorded into CPRS.
  • Assists patients in positioning for tests.
  • Assists Nurses and Physicians in other clinical duties as assigned.
  • Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions.
  • Perform EP, such as visual evoked potentials (VEP), brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER), somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP), long term video EEG (LTM), and routine EEG testing procedures on inpatient, ICU, and outpatient settings.
  • Apply electrodes, interpret and monitor electroencephalographic data to ensure safety and proper treatment of monitor epilepsy patients.
  • Assist multidisciplinary team in electrodiagnostic testing if needed.
  • The EEG test takes around half an hour, during which, the technologist will use blinking lights to arouse brain activity in the patient. During this phase, the technician must ensure that the patient keeps his eyes close and maintains a regular breathing-pattern. The patient's heart rate is also monitored.
  • Prior to the testing, the EEG technologist is in charge of a pre-test discussion. During this session, he collects and notes down the patient's medical history. Also, part of the EEG technologist's duty is to calm the patients before the procedure, since, more often than not, they are frightened / stressed.


Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Maybe required On Call per ER need.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation.
Certification: Higly desirable, not required.

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Registration offered by the American Board of Registration of EEG, CNIM & EP Technologists (ABRET) or the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Techs (AAET)
Grade Determinations:

GS-06 Experience: You must have at least one year of experience comparable to the GS-5 grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. Candidates must also demonstrate all of the knowledge, skills, and abilities below
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and EEG interpretation.
  • Ability to position patients for the examination or treatment including using standard alternate positions for patient with common physical disabilities.
  • Ability to operate the appropriate EEG equipment to administer routine, standardized diagnostic or treatment procedures.
  • Knowledge of normal and abnormal results to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures.
  • Knowledge of universal precautions and basic sterilization methods to clean instruments to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
  • Knowledge of EEG and peripheral equipment to conduct routine maintenance and adjustment checks.

GS-07 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-6) which demonstrates the KSAs and other characteristics as an EEG Tech. This would be experience which provided you with the KSAs to independently conduct difficult but standardized electroencephalography examinations. In addition, must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  • Ability to perform more complex electroencephalography studies such as evoked potential (visual, auditory, somatosensory) and transcranial Doppler studies.
  • Knowledge of medication effects related to electroencephalography studies and clinical situations requiring medication.
  • Knowledge of life threatening or medically emergent testing or patient situations.
  • Ability to recognize artifacts (patient or environmental) and document, eliminate, or take proper measures to monitor the artifact.

GS-08 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-07) which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the more complex procedures, the pharmacology related to this occupation, and knowledge of related acute disorders and diseases and their effects on organs and methods of treatment. In addition, must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  • Ability to interpret testing data to evaluate critical information for surgeons and other medical staff during testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and the ability to understand the relationship of EEG and evoked potential testing in detecting states of disease and health.
  • Knowledge of behavior assessment during seizure attacks in order to insure adequacy of recordings during seizure discharges.
  • Knowledge of a variety of advanced EEG equipment and peripheral equipment such as equipment for brain mapping, video EEG telemetry systems with seizure detection computers, and spike analysis software.
  • Knowledge of anticonvulsant medications and their effects on the EEG as well as other frequently used pharmaceuticals.
  • Ability to adapt Neuro-diagnostic devices, parameters, and procedures to complex, unusual, and often critical situations.

GS-09 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs:
  • Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures.
  • Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
  • Ability to manage and supervise employees.


GS-10 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KS As at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required to provide the most complex EEG Technician services and/or supervisory knowledge, skills, and abilities. Participation in recognized professional organizations as a Board examiner, in the development of curricula for training, or testing for the Board is evidence of competence. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs:
  • Advanced knowledge of the most complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations.
  • Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget.
  • Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program.
  • Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS10.

Physical Requirements: MIT must be able to use their hands to handle, control, and/or feel objects, tools, or controls. They must be able to repeat the same movements, bend or twist their body, and sit or stand for long periods of time. MIT must be able to hold their arm and hand in one position or hold their hand steady while moving their arm. They may be required to move two (2) or more limbs and/or fingers together while remaining in place, use one or two hands to grasp, move, or assemble objects.
