Summary

This position is located within the Regional Support Services Program, Naval Support Activity, MWR Department, Recreation Division. The purpose of this position is to drive trucks, tow­ trucks and other vehicles that may be used in the support of transportation or logistical requirements.

Duties

Operates a variety of vehicles (tow-trucks, step vans, etc.) on a regularly established schedule as well as specific trip assignments to pick up and deliver materials and equipment or tow equipment and vehicles to various locations within the Mid-Atlantic region. Responds to requests for vehicle towing including disabled vehicles. Determines the manner and sequence of loading cargo to achieve load balance and adequate protection of fragile items using tie-down ropes or tarpaulin to protect the items during transportation from shifting. Marks dangerous or protruding cargo with flags, placards or reflection lights.
Prior to towing vehicles, carefully inspects the condition of the vehicle and records any scratches, dents, chips, etc., along with the vehicle identification number, year, make, model, vehicle registration and vehicle condition. Upon delivery, obtains signature from receiving personnel.

Performs regular cleaning and preventative maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment to ensure optimum performance. This includes inspection of the tires, lights, brakes, and ensuring the proper levels of gasoline and oil. Maintains an accurate record keeping system which includes, but is not limited to trip/mileage logs, fuel consumption, vehicle operation reports, safety records, etc.

Assists in the monthly auction of abandoned vehicles, moving them from impound lot to auction lot. May be required to assist with the inventorying and cleaning of vehicles prior to auction, preparing proper documentation for the disposal of personal effects and for sale of vehicle.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Must possess skill to operate special-purpose vehicles over a variety of roads including interstate highways, narrow roads and steep winding grades. Skill in the operation of special-purpose accessory equipment to power takeoff devices, hydrolic dumping mechanisms, winches and power lifts. Knowledge of pertinent traffic and safety laws and regulations in regards to the vehicle being driven. Must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license. Knowledge and skill in the operation of a personal computer and software (word processing, spreadsheet and database) is preferred.
