Museum Technician (Natural Science)

The Musuem Technician will serve in the natural science department performing duties to include all collections management tasks associated with research collections.

In this position, you will:

• Participate in general collections management activities and maintenance.

• Process fresh, frozen or preserved specimens by pinning, spreading, skinning, skeletonizing, using

  fluid preservatives or other methods.

• Process all categories of specimen transactions (loans, borrows, exchanges, gifts, etc.) following established procedures.

• Provide general and technical information and assistance to researchers and the public through correspondence, verbal communication and tours.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology. 

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of full-time experience at the GS-05 grade level that is close or similar to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects.  For this position specialized experience is defined as providing assistance with museum collections management tasks including  registration, inventory, collections care and conservation, object curation, storage improvement, data capture, cataloguing, digitization, maintenance of datasets containing collections information and researcher assistance.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online multiple-choice questions that assess your experience, education, and/or training for the job related competencies below:

MANDATORY SELECTIVE FACTOR: Knowledge of museum practices and methods for handling natural science collections and specimens.

• Knowledge of best practices regarding natural history collections management principles, techniques and use of natural science specimens and objects in a museum setting.
• Skill in specimen processing including labeling and storage following museum procedures. 
• Knowledge of techniques, equipment, and software used in cataloging collections information.
• Ability to communicate verbally effectively at all levels of the organization and the outside.
• Ability to record data accurately and legibly for specimens.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

• Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.
• Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
• Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
