Duties

The Nurse positions in the assigned specialty are located at a facility within the Southeast Region Indian Health Service which there may not be immediate vacancies at all duty locations. The purpose of this position in the assigned specialty is to provide comprehensive nursing care to patients across the age spectrum and apply established professional nursing concepts, principles and practices to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for patients.

Nurse (Care Manager)

  • Manage complex patient care, develop care plans, coordinate services, and improve outcomes using clinical judgment. Collaborates with multidisciplinary health team for patient care planning and referral.
Nurse (Case Management) or Nurse (Case Manager)
  • Provide care coordination, patient assessment, education, and referral support; collaborates with care teams and facilitates transitions for patients served.
Nurse (Community Health)
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care, counseling, health education, emergency care, home visits, and community health assessments in clinics, homes, and schools.
Nurse (Diabetes Educator)
  • Provide tailored education and support in teaching diabetes management, deliver instruction, conduct assessment, and design educational materials. Develop lesson plan, maintain record-keeping, understand group dynamics, and foster facilitation. Adept at coordinating activities and collaborating with diverse contacts to enhance learning outcomes.
Nurse (Discharge Planner/Case Manager)
  • Coordinate patient discharge planning, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, assess post-care needs, secure resources, and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations to support safe, effective transitions of care. Assist patient with healthcare benefits enrollment, provide guidance in accessing and managing personal health records, and coordinate with providers.
Nurse (Educator)
  • Provide lectures, create engaging presentations, and design educational materials. Develop lesson plan, maintain record-keeping, understand group dynamics, and foster facilitation. Adept at coordinating activities and collaborating with diverse contacts to enhance learning outcomes.
Nurse (Emergency Room)
  • Provide emergency nursing care, triage patients, administer medications, perform life-saving interventions, operate critical care equipment, and document care. Serve as charge nurse, coordinate patient care and facilitate safe, timely inter-facility transfers in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
Nurse (Infection Control)
  • Implement infection control programs, conduct surveillance, educate staff on best practices, ensure regulatory compliance, analyze infection data, and collaborate with healthcare teams to reduce infections in clinical settings. Promote patient safety, manage employee health records, develop comprehensive reports for quality improvement initiatives, and support clinical committees with data-driven insights to enhance healthcare outcomes.
Nurse (Informaticist)
  • Provide health informatics, expertise in Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, data analysis, quality improvement initiatives, and systems implementation. Adept at collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to optimize healthcare delivery, enhance patient outcomes, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Design, coordinate, and conduct comprehensive EHR training sessions during orientation and on an ongoing basis to ensure staff proficiency and effective system use.
Nurse (Inpatient)
  • Provide direct inpatient care, assess and implement care plans, administer treatments and medications, collaborate with healthcare teams, maintain accurate records, and educate patients and families.
Nurse (Medical/Surgical)
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care, including patient assessments, care planning, medication administration, collaboration with providers, and use of EHR systems to ensure quality patient outcomes. Assists in the setup of operating room, prepare operating equipment, and evaluate patient response to obtain desired outcome by monitoring progress, therapeutic intervention, and update plan of care. Provide direction to nursing personnel, ensure efficient teamwork and high-quality care delivery throughout patient procedures and recovery.
Nurse (OB/GYN)
  • Provide direct OB/GYN nursing care, including prenatal, labor, delivery, and postpartum care. Manage high-risk pregnancies, perform patient education, collaborate with healthcare teams, and support women's reproductive health.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Note: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied.

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Experience: The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. Specialized experience must be documented in your resume if you're applying for an assigned specialty.

GS-05: Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing with no experience; OR Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and one full year of professional nursing experience.

GS-07: Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provision; OR Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level); OR Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience; OR Completion of at least one full year of graduate education in a professional nursing educational program.

GS-09: Possession of a master's degree in professional nursing; OR At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or above) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program.

GS-10: At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or above) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program.

GS-11: Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field OR At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.

GS-12: At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-11 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program.

Nurse (Occupational Health)

  • Provide occupational health nursing care, manage workplace safety, conduct health assessments, educate employees on health risks, ensure regulatory compliance, and collaborate with healthcare teams.
Nurse (Operating Room)
  • Assist with surgeries, managing sterile techniques, provide perioperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care, handle surgical equipment, collaborate with surgical teams, and ensure compliance with safety and infection control standards.
Nurse (Outpatient)
  • Provide direct outpatient care, assess and implement care plans, administer treatments and medications, collaborate with healthcare teams, maintain accurate records, and educate patients and families.


Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position may be covered by a Bargaining Unit depending on duty location.

Government housing may be authorized depending on duty location and availability.

Recruitment or relocation incentives may or may not be authorized and is subject to availability and service unit approval. If offered, you will be required to sign at least a 12 month service agreement. Failure to fulfill the service agreement will result in repayment of the incentive.
