Duties

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:  Prepares surfaces by accepted methods and techniques and ensures they meet smoothness, level and shape requirements.  Paints interior and exterior of buildings, counters, cabinets, etc., using standard painting methods such as brushing, rolling and spraying. Uses common painting tools.  Sets up and uses scaffolding, staging and ladders. Prepares and refinishes drywall surfaces.  Prepares coating materials by blending, tinting, toning and mixing in various additives to get proper color, texture, consistency and drying state.  Performs special coating methods such as marbling and graining using coating materials prepared in special, as well as common ways and by applying coating techniques that ensure surfaces have a smooth-textured and decorative appearance and meet desired match, texture and thickness level requirements.  Builds up, shapes and levels surfaces with metal and synthetic resins, plastics and patching compounds.  Obtains finely smoothed surfaces with abrasives, evens out dents by burning-in processes and treats surfaces with pre-coating agents.  Assures coating finishes meet desired match, texture and thickness requirements.  Uses tools and equipment such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, trowels and viscosity testers. Complies with required fire, safety, sanitation, and hazardous waste disposal rules and regulations.  May operate vehicle to transport tools and materials to work site.  Will perform other general maintenance duties according to departmental priorities.

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner.  Takes action to solve problems quickly.  Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise.  Adheres to safety regulations and standards.  Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor.  Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

EVALUATIONS:

Qualifications

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:  Experience that demonstrates knowledge of painting procedures and techniques.  Knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques.  Skill to sand, wire brush, scrape, spackle and putty surfaces, to brush out, roll on and spray coat materials.  Knowledge of staging, scaffolding and ladders, and the skill to use them in a safe and acceptable manner.  Skill to make carpentry repairs as necessary. Possession of a valid state driver¿s license.

RESPONSIBILITY:  Works under general supervision.  The majority of the work is performed independently. Personal knowledge determines the methods, techniques, materials and devices best suited to obtain smooth textures and decorative surfaces.  Ensures the surface coating meets level and thickness requirements. 

PHYSICAL EFFORT:  Requires prolonged standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Work is performed inside and outside; including exposure to bad weather, in areas that may vary from clean rooms to areas that are noisy, dirty and smoky.  Will be exposed to paint fumes, paint vapors, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, heat, cuts, bruises and possibility of broken bones from falling ladders and scaffolds.  May be required to wear protective gear to include facemasks.
