Summary

This position is located with the Office of Secure Transportation (OST), Office of Technical Services (OTS), Safety and Security Division (SSD), Environment, Safety and Health Branch. Duties

As a Physical Scientist NN-1301-02 your major duties will include:

  • Participating on team-based projects; organize and provide technical oversight and direction for projects; and prepare, present, and evaluate plans, designs, reports, and correspondence.
  • Serving in a technical position role responsible for planning, administering, evaluating, and coordinating the OST Over-the-Road safety basis document and the Integrated Safety Management (ISM) system description which includes the OST Quality Assurance program.
  • Being responsible for evaluating hazards associated with OST OTR operations and assisting other organizations within OST with developing hazard control sets.

As a Physical Scientist NN-1301-03 your major duties will include:
  • Acting as principal contributors on team-based projects; organize and provide technical oversight and direction for projects; and prepare, present, and evaluate plans, designs, reports, and correspondence.
  • Serving in a technical position responsible for planning, administering, evaluating, and coordinating the OST Over-the-Road safety basis document and the Integrated Safety Management (ISM) system description which includes the OST Quality Assurance program.
  • Being responsible for evaluating hazards associated with OST OTR operations and assisting other organizations within OST with developing hazard control sets.

Qualifications

For the Physical Scientist NN-02 position:

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower NNSA pay band level or GS grade level in the Federal Service, i.e., NN-01 or GS-08.

Specialized experience for this position is defined as: Experience with technical management and coordination of design and science projects; Experience with project management responsibilities for proposed and ongoing projects; Experience evaluating new technologies for potential application in assigned projects; Experience communicating sensitive or controversial issues in writing and orally with technical and management personnel.


For the Physical Scientist NN-03 position:

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower NNSA pay band level or GS grade level in the Federal Service, i.e., NN-02 or GS-11.

Specialized experience for this position is defined as: Experience in the application of advanced program management principles, practices and techniques associated with Quality Assurance and Hazard Analysis Programs. Independently accomplish projects or assignments supporting larger projects within integrated safety management programs; participate in regular information planning sessions, maintain productive interaction with staff, monitor, report work status and progress, and recommend actions when adjustments require a different course of action.

Education

Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

    OR

  2. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
