Duties
The Pipefitter Leader position is located in the Facilities Management Division (AFM), Operations Department of the National Gallery of Art. The Pipefitter Leader is responsible for leading and passing on work assignments to subordinate pipefitter mechanics, training subordinate Pipefitter mechanics, repair, inspect, operate, service, troubleshoot, maintain, and install new and existing steam heating high temperature, hot water heating, gas, air and plumbing equipment.
The Pipefitter Leader will lead subordinate mechanics in the repairing, inspecting, operating, servicing, troubleshooting and maintaining building mechanical equipment, piping systems to include the steam, hot and chilled water, potable water, sanitary sewage, storm water and all plumbing systems within the National Gallery of Art.
In this position you will:
- Be responsible for the tracing of hard-to-locate defects or problems and completing repairs, modifications, installations and maintenance on steam water and sewage systems with little or no advice.
- Maintain knowledge on the purpose and function of the various systems components and auxiliary equipment such as water pumps, hydronic water pumps, water filters, circulating pumps, heating and cooling coils, sewage ejection pots, water backflow preventers, steam pressure reducing stations, steam traps, and domestic plumbing devices such as water closets, urinals, showers and lavatories.
- Repair and modify sewage, water, gas, air, oil, steam, fire and landscape piping systems and equipment. Ability to recognize and determine the best method for correcting malfunctions and the skill to make repairs to a variety of plumbing, steam and water piping systems.
- Work from building plans, construction blueprints, engineering drawings, and plumbing and pipefitting maintenance and repair manuals.
- Receive written work orders, oral instructions and piping diagrams indicating the nature of work to be performed.
- Use shop mathematics, and lay out such things as angles, arcs and circles.

Must be able to work in enclosed spaces on a regular basis. Must be able to work for an hour at a time in an area that is uncomfortably cold or hot. Must be able to work in areas that are more dusty or greasy than a typical office environment. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders. Must be able to turn large valves and read small gauges. Cannot have severely impaired senses of smell, vision, hearing or touch. Must be able to lift own body weight.
