Duties

A WG-3806-10, SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT):

  • Inspects and troubleshoots aircraft structures such as fuselage, tail, wings, cowlings and stabilizers.
  • Determines the nature and extent of repairs to be made using applicable Technical Manuals (TMs) as guidelines.
  • Removes, fabricates, repairs, modifies, and installs parts and assemblies, such as frames, stringers, longerons, bulkheads, beams, ribs, spars, skin, cowling, brackets, fairing, stressed and double contour skins using hand or powered tools and a variety of metal working equipment.
  • Fits and trims components to aircraft such as loading gear doors, ailerons, flaps, engine access doors and similar assemblies.
  • Performs fabrication of local manufactured items required for facility support.
  • Work includes layout, bending, cutting, forming and assembling. Devises and calculates patterns employing the principles of triangulation, radial, and parallel line development.
  • Aligns component structures and airframe using precision optical measuring instruments, plum line and level.
  • Repairs cracks in aircraft skin.
  • Fabricates and fits patches to damaged areas as necessary to retain or restore original strength.
  • Installs regular, heat-treated, high shear, and blind type aircraft rivets and fasteners by using pneumatic riveters, bucking bars and other special tools.
  • Performs metal to metal bonding where delamination of surfaces or core material occurs. Inspects for corrosion conditions which are eliminated by chemical treatment or material replacement.
  • Inspects, repairs, fabricates and replaces honeycomb and fiberglass structural assemblies.
  • Sets up, operates and maintains power shears, metal brakes, rolls, dimpling machines, drills, saws, heat-treating furnaces, hardness testers, arc and oxyacetalene welders and other metal working equipment and tools of the trade.
  • Works from blueprints, technical manuals, diagrams and work orders.
  • Prepares and designs layout, dies, jigs, and templates necessary to carry out fabrication, repair or modification of aircraft, general support equipment and facility support equipment.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of ferrous and nonferrous metal and mechanical drawing and shop mathematics.
  • May paint, strip or stencil aircraft and/or components.
  • Participates in the safety program for the sheet metal function.
  • Performs on-the-job training as required and evaluates training effectiveness.
  • May assist in the requisitioning and identifying stock material, parts and equipment.
  • Reviews and maintains applicable technical manuals and publications.
  • Maintains records and makes proper entries on log book forms.
  • May assist in other functions within the Component Repair Shop in the accomplishment of mission requirements.
  • May assist authorized firefighters in the performance of fire/crash/rescue duties as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Military Grades: E2-E7

Compatible Military Assignments: 15G, 15T

- Applicants need not be assigned to the position or possess the MOS to apply or be considered for selection. Selected applicant must be assigned to a compatible Military position and attain MOS within 1 year of appointment action.

- Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.

- All soldiers, civilian employees, and contractor employees who drive Army-owned or leased vehicles must complete the Army Avoidance Course (AAC) training when they start working for the Army. Must have a valid Washington state and military driver's license. Must be able to obtain a Government Travel Card (GTC) and be able to attend all schools deemed necessary by the supervisor.

- Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

- Must maintain membership in the WA Army National Guard for continued employment.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
- Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the ability to plan, manufacture, and install cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastenings such as rivets, single and double-hem edges and single, double or grooved seams.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Must have at least 18 months of experience or training in planning, layout, and construction skills to manufacture items and systems with dovetailed seams, set-in-bottom seams, burred-bottom seams, or wired or lock seams. Experience using more complicated shop tools and equipment. Experience in using metals including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, aluminum, honeycomb material and alloys. Experience demonstrating the use of more complicated mathematical calculations and complicated measuring instruments.

Education

Education Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED.

Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience:

Not Applicable.

  • Subject to danger involved in or resulting from: use of powered shop equipment, high pressure gas cylinders and high electrical voltage; swiftly activated hydraulic or pneumatic metal aircraft assemblies, such as landing gear, speed brakes, flaps, and other components; working near aircraft, jet blast, heat, fuel, oil, high noise levels, icy ramps, wet or slippery surfaces of aircraft and work stands.
  • Expected to plan work sequences, select tools and repair parts, and otherwise carry assignments through to completion, referring only unusual and difficult problems to the supervisor.
  • Able to remove, fabricate, repair, modify and install primary sheet metal parts, assemblies using power shears, brakes, slip roll machines, crimpers and beading machines.
  • Develops patterns and lay out, cuts, forms, joins, assembles and installs sheet metal items on aircraft.
  • Able to set up burring, turning and bending machines.
