Summary

THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION.

This National Guard position is for a SURFACE MAINTENANCE MECHANIC SUPERVISOR (T32), PD# D1291000 and is part of the RI Field Maintenance Shop 1. The purpose of this position is to supervise workers directly or through subordinate leaders and/or supervisors in accomplishing work of the function.

Duties

Plans use of subordinate workers, equipment, facilities, and materials on a week-to-week or month-to-month basis. Establishes deadlines, priorities, and work sequences, and plans work assignments based on general work schedules, methods, and policies set by the supervisor. Coordinates work with supporting or related work functions controlled by other supervisors. Determines the number and types of workers needed to accomplish specific projects. Determines skills, materials, and equipment required to do the work. Redirects individual workers and resources to accomplish unanticipated work. Informs the supervisor of the need to revise work schedules and re-estimate labor and other resources. Participates in the initial planning of current and future work schedules, staffing needs, estimates, and recommendations as to scheduling projected work. Assists the supervisor with quarterly funding distribution and decisions, based on operational needs for units supported by customer activities. Reviews funding requirements, prioritizes request and allocates funding based on readiness, training, and mobilization requirements. Provides management with workload data, estimates, and recommendations to facilitate more effective management decisions for staffing and funding requirements to support customer units.
Assigns tasks to be performed based on readiness and explains work requirements, methods, and procedures. Investigates work related problems such as excessive costs or low productivity and determines causes. Implements corrective actions within authority to resolve work problems. Recommends solutions to staffing problems, engineering requirements, and work operations directed by other supervisors. Ensures work in progress and completed work meets established standards by implementation of a quality control and assurance program within the organization.
Performs non-supervisory work, such as, transporting equipment, performing maintenance tasks, etc.
Plans and establishes overall leave schedules. Determines training needs of subordinates and arranges for accomplishment. Sets performance standards and makes formal appraisals of subordinate work performance. Initiates recommendations for promotion or reassignment of subordinates. Ensures that regulations governing safety and housekeeping are observed with appropriate protective clothing and equipment being utilized.
Performs other duties as assigned.

  • NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. This is an excepted service position that requires current membership in the Rhode Island Army National Guard.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position. Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
  • Ability to establish effective professional working relationships with coworkers and customers, contributing to a cooperative working environment and successful accomplishment of the mission.
  • Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.
  • You are responsible to maintain awareness of your environmental responsibilities as dictated by legal and regulatory requirements, your organization, and its changing mission.

E7 - E8

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Must have experience or training, which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and is able to use common tools and equipment in the line of work.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Must have specialized experience which required the review of work requirements and establish priorities to meet deadlines. Experience that provided knowledge of various lines of work performed by this function. Experience which demonstrates the ability to supervise or the potential to perform such duties as evidenced by the ability to communicate knowledge of general supervisory concepts, and knowledge of shop processes.

  • Thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical systems that have a functional relationship and effect on the operation of mechanical systems.
  • Ability to perform administrative functions; to read and interpret a variety of technical publications used in the repair of supported equipment.
  • Skilled to use a wide variety of test and diagnostics equipment to perform fault isolation and conduct repair of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to operate and understand original equipment manufacturer computerized diagnostic equipment and embedded diagnostics.
  • Extensive knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic controls.
