Summary

This position is located in the Operational Factors Division (OFD), Office of Aviation Safety (OAS). OFD examines issues related to air traffic control, flight operations, and meteorology. The incumbent serves as the technical expert that is responsible for determining the relevant investigative issues and prepares detailed written factual reports describing the conditions and circumstances pertaining meteorological aspects of transportation accidents/incidents.


Duties

As a Senior Meteorologist (Investigations), GS-1340-14, you will perform the following major duties:

  • The incumbent serves as a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) meteorologist with primary emphasis on the investigation and analysis of weather-related aspects of transportation accidents/incidents that occur throughout the United States and the world.
  • The incumbent, as part of the agency go-team rotation, is assigned as the technical expert that is responsible for determining the relevant investigative issues and prepares detailed written factual reports describing the conditions and circumstances pertaining to the meteorological aspects of transportation accidents/incidents.
  • The incumbent leads specialized research projects and studies and participates as the technical expert in such special research projects, studies and investigations, as needed.
  • The incumbent develops and makes formal presentations at national/international conferences and other forums.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following Basic Requirements:BASIC REQUREMENT AND INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
  1. Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:
    1. At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
      1. Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;*
      2. Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);
      3. Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and
      4. Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
    2. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.*
    3. Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.*
    4. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.

    * There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.

  2. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting one of the above Basic Requirements, you must also possess the following:GS-14: You MUST have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector).

Specialized experience is defined as:

  • Serving as a meteorologist of transportation-related teams and providing technical guidance on the analysis of atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale), physical meteorology, and remote sensing of the atmosphere;
  • Providing meteorology-related presentations to leadership officials and drafting meteorological presentations, guidance, and procedures;
  • Creating meteorology reports and providing safety recommendations related to transportation needs; and
  • Advising on meteorological safety topics.
