Major Duties:
The Women's Health Social Worker will provide specialty Mental Health services to the women Veteran population enrolled at Kansas City VA Medical Center (KCVAMC) with a focus on Reproductive Health. Services include provision of high-quality case management, clinical treatment, advocacy, and coordination of linkages to other appropriate VA or community service providers / agencies as needed by the client. This is accomplished in collaboration with other members of the Women's Mental Health Team, Women's Health or other interdisciplinary treatment teams as appropriate. Specifically, services will focus on providing evidenced based therapeutic techniques for women Veterans.
The WH Social Worker will be located at KCVAMC outpatient Mental Health Clinic and independently provide clinical psychosocial and case management services at an advanced practice level to eligible Veterans and their family members to meet biological, psychological, social and environmental needs. The Veterans' health care and psychosocial needs are complex and require a high degree of clinical oversight and creative problem solving. Incumbent is responsible for providing outpatient based mental health treatment and psychosocial intervention to address a broad range of medical and mental health issues.
Serves Veterans who tend to have serious, frequent and severe crises, lack family or adequate community support networks, frequently fails to comply with instructions and treatments; have significant deficits in coping skills and require continuing psychosocial support. Incumbent provides a continuum of care encompassing individual, group, demonstrating possession of advanced practice skills and judgment.
- Conducts biopsychosocial assessments of the Veteran in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team, the Veteran, family members and significant others.
- Working within the Women Veterans Mental Health Team to develop a treatment plan with the Veteran based on this assessment.
- Responsible for using the current social work resource file of VA and community social service programs and enhancing the content to the benefit of veterans. The social worker will refer the veteran to needed services.
- The Senior Social Worker interprets and explains VA treatment and benefit programs. When appropriate and feasible, the senior social worker will educate and encourage the Veteran/family to advocate on own behalf, thus fostering a sense of independence and empowerment.
- Ensures that the Women Veterans Mental Health Teams are kept informed of any concerns with the patient and/or caregiver.
- Provides independent consultation and makes recommendations to the interdisciplinary teams on course of treatment.
- The Incumbent will provide individual and group psychotherapy along with advanced level case management interventions using evidenced based therapeutic techniques for women Veterans such as but not limited to: Interpersonal Therapy for Depression and for Reproductive Mental Health, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and other clinical interventions which are clinically privileged.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66
