Physical Demands: Prior to being hired, incumbent must demonstrate the ability to pass the U.S.C.G. mandated physical for licensing. The small craft operators use moderate effort when operating controls and observing conditions while underway. Coordination of hand and eye is necessary to direct or operate controls while approaching docking locations. Standing, walking, stooping, bending, and kneeling are involved. Requires moderate carrying of supplies on and off the vessel. Mild to moderate arm strength is required to adjust navigational ropes. Moderate to heavy lifting is involved during mooring operations.
Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed in the shelter of the pilot house and on the deck of the ferry. While on the deck, the operator is exposed to the elements (heat, cold, rain, snow, winds, etc.), and the deck will be hot, slippery, wet, etc. at times. Standing for long periods of time is required. Operators are exposed to the possibility of falling overboard. Hazardous conditions may be present during periods of high-water levels and when floating debris is present on the river. Operations occur during periods of extreme hot and cold weather. May be exposed to fuel, solvents, greases, etc. as well as moving and cutting parts. Engine noise, vibration, and fumes are present, but mild, while in operation. Night operations and extended shifts are occasionally required. **Employee is required to enter cave environment, which, might include tight spaces, variant temperatures, radon exposures, and cave animals including bats.**
Documentation for the
Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility,
submission of ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months. If they did not complete performance appraisals ask them to provide a statement of performance for
each period of service. The statement must specify the dates for each employment period and your level of performance (dates should match the dates on the SF-50s).
