Duties

If you are selected as an Student Trainee( Information Technology Intern), you will work with higher graded staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience that augments training in an academic course of study.

  • Provides advice and guidance to other Audit Division employees on a wide range and variety of IT issues in a manner that minimizes interruptions in customers' ability to carry out critical business activities.
  • Assists in providing presentations and technical training to senior staff & team leaders, and ensures policies and procedures are followed.
  • Assists in the design, development, and maintenance of data management systems that meet current and future business requirements of the OIG and its customers.
  • Evaluates and proposes the adoption of new or enhanced approaches to delivering IT services, including expanded utilization of PowerBI.
  • Identifies and resolves problems, determines relevant information, demonstrates using sound judgment, and makes recommendations
  • Assists in the development or modification of software applications using common programming languages, such as SQL.
  • Tests and optimizes the functionality of systems and data.
  • Responsible for coding, testing, and debugging systems to ensure data recovery.
  • Drafts written policies and procedures for both long-term and short-term IT applications and administration plans; performs daily, weekly, and monthly system checks and documents findings for the record.

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • You must be able to pass a background investigation and credit check and drug testing. You will be subject to random drug testing.

  • You will be required to work a minimum of 20 hours a week during the school year.
  • If selected you must complete and sign a Pathways Participant Agreement and will be required to provide the OIG Pathways Program Officer with a copy of your transcript verifying continuous enrollment, GPA and grade requirements each semester.
  • You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better for the duration of this internship (failure to meet this requirement will result in immediate termination).
  • This Internship appointment is intended to last the duration of the student's academic career, and it is not on an intermittent basis.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a Technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, at a qualifying educational institution on a half-time or full-time basis.
  • Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 or better (must provide a transcript and proof of enrollment/acceptance letter); these standards will be in effect for the duration of the internship.
  • Must maintain enrollment/continue education throughout the duration of employment under the Pathways Program.
Minimum Qualifications: In addition to meeting the Basic Qualifications stated above, you must also meet the minimum qualifications for the appropriate grade level, or applicable general or specialized experience, or a combination of both.

To qualify for the GS-7 level, you must have one full year of graduate level education, or eligibility under superior academic achievement provision and completion of a bachelor's degree, or one year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent.

Specialized experience is defined as experience assisting in the design, development, or maintenance of software applications using common programming languages, such as SQL.

Superior Academic Achievement is defined as: a) Class Standing - upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses in the college, university, or major subdivision; b) Grade Point Average - 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of curriculum; OR 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in your major field or the required courses in your major field completed during the final 2 years of your curriculum. If more than 10 percent of total undergraduate credit hours are non-graded, i.e. pass/fail, CLEP, CCAF, DANTES, military credit, etc., you cannot qualify based on GPA; c) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society (note: freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this position). (If qualifying based on class standing or honor society membership, provide appropriate documentation.
