Summary

This position is part of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Pathways Internship Program, providing a developmental experience with formal education and exposure to policy, administration, law, technology, finance, human resources, and communications to support preparation for a civil service career at the EEOC.

The Pathways Internship Program is open to all eligible students regardless of age, including older individuals and veterans who are students.

Duties

  • Researches office files or other sources for pertinent information needed to prepare correspondence, reports, etc.
  • Assists with the reconciliation of data discrepancies.
  • Locates and assembles information from files and documents and responds to non-technical inquiries.
  • Responds to incoming communication, and replies to general inquiries and routine actions.
  • Assists with tasks in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access) data entry/retrieval.
  • Assists management and higher-grade staff with the preparation of various administrative material.

Qualifications

The Pathways Internship Program is open to all eligible students regardless of age, including older individuals and veterans who are students. Program participants may be appointed to any grade level for which they qualify. Previous education and/or experience may be evaluated to determine the highest grade level for which the individual is qualified.

Below are the minimum qualification requirements for each grade advertised:

GS-1 Student Trainee (Clerk): Enrollment in a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) program.
GS-2 Student Trainee (Clerk): Completion of high school or GED diploma.
GS-3 Student Trainee (Clerk): Completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study.
GS-4 Student Trainee (Clerk): Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree.
GS-5 Student Trainee (Assistant): Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.
GS-7 Student Trainee (Admin Support): Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.

In addition to meeting the above minimum qualification requirement, you must meet the Pathways Internship Program Eligibility requirements: you must be a current student in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

Applicants must meet the definition of a "Student" at the time of appointment and throughout the duration of the appointment. Student is defined as: an individual who has been accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled).

Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements (e.g., time-in-grade and qualification requirements) within 30 days of the closing date specified in the vacancy announcement.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This appointment may be extended in increments of up to one year without further competition based on the need of the organization for the work to continue and provided the individual continues to meet the eligibility requirements. Additional extensions may be granted up to the maximum allowable time in accordance with the Program, as long as the program participant maintains student eligibility. At the successful conclusion of this program, you may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a Federal career or career-conditional appointment. Program participants must meet the qualification requirements for the position to which converted.

Education

This position has a basic education requirement listed under the Qualifications section of this announcement. You must submit a copy of your college transcripts. Additional information

This is a temporary Pathways Internship Program appointment beginning early June/mid-June 2026 Not to Exceed 90 days from EOD Date, with September 30, 2026 as the final possible end date, and you will work a full-time schedule.

Supervisors are responsible for establishing work schedules with participants.

You will be expected to report to the duty station listed on this announcement. Relocation expenses will not be paid.

This position may require the incumbent to complete a confidential financial disclosure report within 30 days of appointment.

This position requires that the successful candidate undergo personnel vetting, which includes a background investigation and enrollment upon onboarding into "Continuous Vetting." Enrollment in Continuous Vetting will result in automated record checks being conducted throughout one's employment with the EEOC. The successful candidate will also be enrolled into FBI's Rap Back service, which will allow the EEOC to receive notification from the FBI of criminal matters (e.g., arrests, charges, convictions) involving enrolled individuals in near real-time.

The Pathways Internship Program targets students accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in a accredited educational institution, on at least a half-time basis. Program participants must continue to meet program eligibility requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout the Pathways Internship Program. Failure to do so will result in termination of the appointment.

This internship is temporary and therefore does not have promotion potential.

For GS-1 and GS-2 positions, qualified applicants will be referred using unranked referral procedures and placed into one of four preference groups: (1) compensable 10-point preference eligibles, (2) other 10-point preference eligibles, (3) 5-point preference eligibles, and (4) non-preference eligibles. Selections will be made from the highest available preference group unless fewer than three candidates remain in that group. For GS-3 through GS-7 positions, applicants will be evaluated using the Rule of Many/Cut-off Score method under 5 CFR § 332.402. Under Rule of Many, a numerical ranking process is used to evaluate applicants through validated assessments to produce a numeric score. Veterans' preference points are added to the passing score of candidates eligible for either 10-point or 5-point preference. If fewer than three eligible and available candidates per vacancy result, we will expand the group in accordance with our pre-announced supplement strategy and OPM policy. Under the Rule of Many procedures, the agency is not limited to considering the top three candidates, nor does the agency have to consider candidates in groups of three. Any of the preference eligibles may be selected. Ties in ratings are broken by veterans' preference eligibility, that is, preference eligible candidates are listed ahead of non-preference eligibles within each rating.
