Duties
As a Wildlife Biologist within the Eastern Ecological Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
- Draft and/or review proposals to fund research studies and organize and lead fieldwork. Perform computer data entry, operation and retrieval of data from telemetry and other data collection systems; perform calculations on data for the purpose of making statistical analyses; perform related literature searches and reviews and synthesizes the information.
- Work with scientists, engineers, and technicians as part of a team to accomplish goals. Respond to scientific data information requests and compile reports of activities. Manage scope schedule and budget of funded activities.
- Develop scientific manuscripts and other technical writing. Design and prepare computerized graphics for slides, posters, and manuscripts. Give oral presentations to professional audiences.
- Perform and lead netting, handling and measuring of waterbirds; perform lab/field waterbird studies in seabird colony or on a boat; prepare field reports.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; and bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The work requires moderate physical ability and average agility and dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
- You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
- Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
- Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
- A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Wildlife Biologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biological science that included:
- at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research course in the field of wildlife biology; and
- at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
- at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences. ** OR
B. Combination of education and experience-equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent), with at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours or the equivalent in zoology, and 9 semester hours or the equivalent in botany or related plant science, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
For GS-12:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in wildlife biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service.
Examples of GS-11 level work may include: (1) investigating the ecology and dynamics of migratory birds to determine population status and identify limiting factors, (2) identifying environmental factors that might be responsible for declining habitats and recommending approaches for restoration, (3) developing and valuating actions to enhance or restore migratory bird populations or their habitats.; 4) serving as a technical resource on avian biological issues; and/or 5) development of data visualization and decision support tools to aid in management decisions. For examples 1-5, the assignments were planned and carried out independently, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, coordinating the work with others as necessary, relating new work situations to precedent ones, extending or modifying existing techniques, and interpreting and applying program policy in terms of established objectives.
