Duties

As the Advanced Imaging Specialist, you will:

  • Apply various imaging techniques for the documentation of conservation treatments of works of art, high resolution imaging of art objects, installations.
  • Perform high resolution digital capture of files from a variety of studio cameras, non-destructive post-processing of files. Builds/edits 3D models from photogrammetry captures.
  • Apply UV (induced visible fluorescence imaging), RTI imaging to artwork and catalogs all related files in NetX (a digital asset management system).
  • Communicate workflow and system inconsistencies to the Head of Imaging and performs basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting. Is highly organized and able to meet precise project goals within production timelines.
  • Maintain collegial relations with supervisors, immediate co-workers, and other National Gallery staff.
  • Familiarity with specialized museum programs in conservation, education, exhibitions, publicity, research, development, and corporate relations.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1084-11.

For this position, specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-9 level in the federal service, creating three-dimensional models of artwork using photogrammetry.

The following are also integral to the position and such experience will be addressed after candidate certificates are issued: (1) use of raking light in photographing conservation treatments; (2) color calibrating monitors, large format printers and large format digital cameras; (3) producing at least 100 scientific images applying full and limited spectrum light sources; and (4) documenting art conservation treatments by creating digital images.

At time of interview, candidates may be asked to provide ten (10) three-dimensional models they created and ten (10) examples of photographs applicants have taken using optimal studio lighting.

Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria: Requires ability to lift 50 lbs.  Requires normal or corrected vision and normal color perception.  Requires ability to climb a ladder or scaffold.  Requires ability to work overtime.  Requires ability to work outdoors in hot, cold or inclement weather.

Education

Education

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- commercial art, fine arts, art history, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, photography, visual communication, or other fields related to the position. Some positions may also require subject-matter knowledge of medicine, science, or technical equipment.

Advanced training in a vocational school, technical institute, or art institute above the high school level in one of the fields listed above is creditable as general experience on a month-for-month basis.

General Experience (for GS-5 positions): Experience that demonstrated the skills and creativity needed to use the tools or equipment associated with the work. Because talent and creative ability are vital to successful work performance, samples of work or other suitable evidence of technical competence may be required. Unpaid experience that is pertinent should be credited based upon its relevance to the work of the particular position to be filled. To be qualifying, the work must have involved visual communication of information or the application of the principles of artistic design.

Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience in the actual type of work for which application is made. Unpaid experience is creditable, provided the work done was of a quality level and demonstrated the ability required for the position. This includes planning the preparation and use of photographs, illustrations, drawings, and other art work, charts, diagrams, dioramas, maps, slides, overlays, and other kinds of visual material for use in communicating information through visual means.
